CCM Style Finning on SP/DR 370/400

Here's a couple I've done for my Cheneys lately.

The Honda is the early CCM style, the Yamaha the later "every other fin" style...

The main reason it was done so I'm told was to get heat into the motor in those cold Pommy/European days.....to stop cold seizures (most ran methanol to make any sort of decent power and as you know methanol makes your engine run very cold). Only problem doing it here where the sun shines is you could end up overheating the motor. Looks good but whether you end up with another problem is your risk. Manufacturers spend millions making reliable (some don't) motors for a wide variety of purposes, cooling is pretty important.

I thought it was less chance of the fins clogging with mud?  Anyway it looks awesome, Mark that maico barrel looks grouse, love an Ossa GPIII also  :-)

I'm pretty sure I read in Rolling Thunder, the CCM 'bible', that the staggered finning was to prevent them clogging with mud but an unexpected bonus was that they actually ran cooler than the stock B50 close spaced fins.

I thought it was to save weight......then you'd need to add an oil cooler to cool it down.
Like most things theses days.....doesn't matter which, as long as it LOOKS COOL

 If you live in Britain it's obvious. It's mud. Oh and if you want the authentic look you take them off with a chisel....

I do it in a milling machine.

I think it was done to prevent mud clogging the fins, remember the B50, XL350 and XT500 where designed for street use not MX, if you look at a top-end intended for that use it often has more space between the fins.

A bit weightloss is a added bonus.

Anyway, I just do it to make it look like the photos of the original bikes from back then...
