XS650 budget Old School Twin racer
« on: December 20, 2013, 10:43:20 am »
You'd be battling to build this for 5K so the 2.8k he's asking is pretty damn good. The frame's a de-raked stocker but that's not a problem, they apparently work pretty well once all of the street gizmo's are removed and the steering set up at 25-26 degrees. That's a $750 alloy tank on there by the look of it. The downside is it's Kentucky location and the low Aussie dollar which has devalued a lot of these imports to "not worth the trouble". I estimate it'd cost you 5k landed here which is still not too bad considering all things.

1981 Yamaha XS650 flat track bike. Has 750 kit and Pamco ignition system. No smoke on start up or when running. Set up for 3/8 mile with TT pipes. Have Florida title. Many extra parts: 2 practice tires, front and rear sprockets and chains to match gearing, new set of rear brake pads, center and side stands, clutch and throttle cable, 1/2 mile pipes. Ready to race and is very strong. Located in Western Kentucky, Paducah.

Asking $3500 for all or $2800 just for the bike. Might consider trade for 250 set up for flat track racing!

Up to $1,250 for that tank new
Still a cheap bike that can be raced all year for tyres and oil changes

There's quite a few XS650's running around the dirt tracks of Australia like those of Herbie Conlon, Mark Peatman and others but all but a few don't appear to be set up properly. The go with those bikes seems to be to just knock all the weight out of the frame and not touch the wheelbase or steering angle. On track dynamics aside, they don't look right and I reckon they'd turn better and be much more manageable with a rake change and some suspension work.  I'd love to see a few more set up like the above bike.

I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.
