Simo, like Pete said buy it anyhow. I already have one or it would already be sold.

Give me five minutes and I will share some info with you.

I will need a beer first, five minutes, hang on.

Ah thats better.

Ok first of all Mick Hockley had two Squaries.

The pics that Mark put up are of Micks H's 1969 360 squary

See the decompressor at the front of the cylinder above the exhaust?
See the large gap between the cylinder and the head?
See the fold in the airbox is back between the 4 and five digit? = wide frame(seat sub frame rails).

Ok,,,, now the one that is for sale that Paul has posted was in fact Mick H's second bike, which is indeed the very rare 350 model. I believe only around 35 engines made.

notice the narrow gap between the cylinder and head.
The lack of decompressor at the front(it is actually in the rear of the cylinder.
Notice the fold in the air box is more forward = narrow frame(seat sub frame rails).

Ok elegability, let me get another beer first.

LOL ... I'm enjoying this lesson but you don't go far on a beer mick  ;D ;D

Question though ... if it's so rare, are parts a problem or do they interchange?

:D ;D ;D ;D  yes parts are all the same except for the crank and the cylinder. Head is also machined slightly different as well. all the pistons are the same 360//350/400.all starting at 77mm.

Ok,,,re eligibility,,,If you want it in concrete, best contact some one like Dave Tanner I reckon.

In the old yearly rule books like the 2007 one that I have here some where, which is momentarily misplaced ::)

It says that as a carry over,,all Maico squaries are pre-70 eligible,,,as long as they are fitted with the early symmetrical front hub and the round die cast engine cases.

Check with Dave if it still stands,,,as it is now absent in the latest rule book.

Tell me a bit more about Dave's claim it's a Bitsa?

Dave#6's sale strategy that's all.

Talking his offerings up by slagging this one down in his thread "Whats on offer".
This 350 was listed on ebay for $6,900 originally, then down to $5,900.

Any how Dave claims he has finally found his love that he raced when he was younger,,,,so I am guessing he may finally indeed found his keeper,,, :)

Thanks for all the advice Mick.  I will look to Mr Tanner for some further confirmation tomorrow although I doubt he will be able to be exact from just the pictures so I suspect I'll present the bike to him and see what he has to say.

That last line goes to show you've crossed the line .... you've had too much beer I think  ;D  ;D

But seriously thanks again, I really appreciate your help.  And I really appreciate this forum for exactly this sort of help from people that know and care enough to take the time to educate other enthusiasts.  Cheers mate  8)

Cheers Simo.

Just another quick point. I have jigged both these frames they share Identical geometry.
It is only the seat support rails that are different and the air box to suit of course.

I big dog calling, hooroo.

I am obviously not going to be up early Simo. Hopefully Firko will be around to help you.

I will share my concerns,,,
I am a bit suspect about this bike.
Make sure it is the one the seller has pictured.
He has the engine number listed as 381341,,,that really confuses me??
I was told Maico shipped engines as well as complete bikes.
I was told reliably they made two runs of these 350cc engines.
I was told they were close ratio, so that means the serial number begins with "T"
When the first run of engines were produced they were serial stamped under the cylinder on the right hand side,,

The first run were numbered in the lower 200,, that is; "T4022**
By the time the second run were produced they had started stamping the serial numbers on the right hand engine case
right above the counter sprocket, the numbers were still "T402" but had now jumped to the six hundreds,, that is "T4026**
Mick Hockley told a friend of mine that he had bought one bike complete and virtually pieced together the second one himself,, I don't know which was which,, but given the 350cc engines were freely available separately at the time?
I see the pic of that bike shows a decompressor lever on the bars, so if it has a valve on the rear of the cylinder it has to be a 350(345)
The top of the cylinder will have 350cc stamped on it.

With the head off, the measured stroke should be 74mm and the crank is stamped 350 also

Why does the seller think it is a 400?? there must be no ID plate on the steering head?

In that condition, It is a bargain regardless of whether it is a 250/350/360/400.
Sweet handler.
Rossco(NSW), AKA Turtle, absolutely hammers on a 250. He loves it, a definite keeper.

What are you saying Paul? Is it a pre 70 legal bike or not?

So they should have a front ID plate and this one doesn't?

Correct it's not sold until I pay Alex for it but I don't want to buy a bike with questions over its eligibility.

And the fact it appears cheap combined with no ID plate, concerned over the engine etc makes me very nervous.  I believe you get what you pay for. A cheap ineligible bike is not what I'm after.

Okay so I've spoken to Alex again and he reckons that Steve New identified it as pre 70 model due to the clutch being located under the engine.

No chassis plate and engine number t391341 under the barrel.

Sounds legit?

Okay talked with him again and the price is wrong. Alex wants $5250 for the Maico.

He is selling an RM370 for $3500

As nice as it is, it's too much for me to spend :(

All square barrels are legal for pre 70 Craig. Stop worrying whether it's legal and worry about just which Hockley bike it is. I'm waiting for the guy that owns the ex Mick Hockley Maico stash who'll have info on that bike to phone me back . I'll be back to you as soon as I have something solid.

Yamaico Pete.....give me a call.
