feature photo, Mikkola/Wolsink
« on: August 19, 2007, 06:47:16 pm »
thats just gotta be the most awsome pic!
does anyone know how it ended?
Mikkola looks to still be carrying a heap of speed and Wolsink looks to be entering Hell!
i take it Wolsink won but was the crash ugly? did Mikkola run into the suzuki?
did god wave a magical hand and allow Gerrit to save it?
i can't wait till next week!

I remember reading an interview with Wolsink where he said that one finish (plus i guess his five consecutive wins) helped make him into an US superstar that lasted for donkeys years, as was even ramping up in the new millenium - how cool would that be?  Didn't have to win a world championship or anything.  And, for him, meant never having to go near the dentists tools again.

What was all the more amazing was that he was a sand rider (Dutch tracks mostly sand) and Californian tracks true hardpack.  He said he just rode on the verges where it was most 'sand-like' and that was enough.  Doubly cool!

I agree, fantastic pic. Just goes to show why these guys were the best of the best. But Mikkola had his moments against Wolsink too. I'm refering to the pic on page 20 of VMX No 25, Heikki makes Gerrit look like a novice school boy at a sunday club day, classic example of Mikkola doing what he did best at full noise!

ha. I guess I need to explain.....

the reason I scanned & posted this photo was that there had been a lot of yamering about "the greatest Mx photo ever"

- not THIS shot of Wolsink & Mikkola, but one of Weinert and DiStefano
here's the link: http://www.southbayriders.com/forums/showthread.php?p=649317

it's an OK shot, but nowhere as thrilling as one that was lying on the table in a stack of clippings
so I was forced to throw it onto the features page-
http://www.siegecraftnw.com/never.htm

meanwhile, I'm a new person here on OzVMX, I just logged on and saw my scan of my favorite photo....

HELLO GRAEME (cheshire cat smile)  dude you need the rest of the story!

Wolsink later said " I was racing Mikkola and he was right behind me and I knew he would try and pass me on the last corner.
I just hit the last corner and there was this jump which usually carried you to the finish line. I hit the jump so hard that I crashed across the finish line as the winner."

(PS: I mailed your shirts yesterday)

Hey Siege,

Yes, that's a great shot alright, talk about commitment.

Man, I love your site, so many cool photos, great stories, neat T-shirts and oh-so-nice models. How come we don't get trophy girls like that over here????

Thanks for the shirts, really looking forward to getting them!

Hey Graeme

sorry man- I didn't mean to give you the silent treatment (high maintenance gf!)

just resurfacing after 4 days of furiously painting the house- I finally went out in to the shop last night when it was dark and
started putting together the IT465 engine - new bearings/seals

thanks for the kind words - often I'm asked am I dating all the models (!)
oh yeah- sure- all day long- why doi you think I look worn out? what a complicated mess-

nah- I wouldn't have time for the real stuff- like taking the IT465 clutch back off three times
because the spring on the kicker wasn't in its groove.....

back to the photo: here in the NW US we seem to celebrate certain MX Stars of old and ignore others
the ones I would like to meet and ask a few questions to are missing from the scene: these two for example....

The Mikkola/Wolsink shot makes me ask 2 questions.... I see in the background there is a guy with a movie camera; I wonder if the footage is floating around somewhere? Man I'd love to see it! And second, are my old eyes failing me or does Wolsink have a stepped seat? Man he is 40 years ahead of his time LOL.

Or it may be the strap across the seat for the pillion to hang onto  ;D

It looks a decent camera too, wonder what did happen to the footage?
