I would be interested in that as well I have a cr 250 alloy roller I want to find a 500 motor for I wondered if the air cooled 500 would fit it.

cheers Dale.

Mines is 01 I know you can just buy the brackets and fit the watercooled 500 if I could get my hands on one.

If you buy one of these kits & fit it or do the frame mods yourself it will  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Complete-aluminum-frame-conversion-kit-04-05-CRF250R-CR500-engine-/121152161190?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item1c353b45a6      The front downtube Y piece on the 4T frame is the major sticking point, this kit raises it so the header pipe has clearance ;).I have been looking & dreaming about one of these kits for a few weeks, got a CRF250 that needs repowering,Frosty as your bike is a 2t you may not have too many dramas fitting the 500 donk :)

Too much messing about, you would have to relocate all the brackets then the motor could be too tall anyway with that big finned head, I doubt the swingarm bolt would line up.

Talked to a bloke today that says it should bolt straight in, tomorrow will tell as I'm taking the bike over to where the engine was built and  where going to try it, like you said the taller air cooled head may get in the road but that's the least of my worries, I can put a different tank on it, so I will let you guys no tomorrow night.....

If this engine fits then I can't wait to get on this thing it should be a rocket ship.....

Yes it fits, ye ha, the rear mount is fine the bottom one is fine the front engine mount and the one on the back of the head need very slight modification , you can also rebuild the top end with the motor in the frame.. We've also gone for the 84 model tank but left the 87 seat on I the bike seams to fit good, so now it's off to the guy that built the engine to get the pipe made and hopefully we can get this thing going in the next couple of weeks....

Can't wait...

It's a VMC sidecar Frosty....
I own the roller and my now passenger had already biult an Air cooled 500 for another project so that's why we've gone back to the 84 motor.
The original engine was an 87 model.
Can email some pics if someone can put them up...

Hi Walter, it came as a roller with no motor, and the passenger I now ride with had this motor already built so it was just easier to put it in rather than look for a water cooled one, this motor has been modified some what so it should be fine, up here were not racing for sheep stations so Pre 85 is fine with the rest of the boys, at least it won't be sitting in some body's shed going to waste, there's already a couple of bikes up here that aren't period correct so all good...
The wasp can now sit for a while till this one is done...

Water cooled is a bit hard to find I am after one not desperately you can buy them from the US but costs a little bit.

It is funny a rebuilt motor can run you more than a complete cr500 I couldn't wreck a complete cr 500 though unless it was a rat just to harvest the motor for my alloy roller.
