Need help with 88 RM250
« on: July 22, 2013, 07:51:45 am »
So I just picked up a 88 RM250 for super cheap that is pretty rough.  The clutch is having some issue that is making the lever really hard to pull.  The cable looks fine.  I was going to pull the clutch cover to see how it looks but I cannot for the life of me get the kicker off the shaft.  Does anyone know if there is some sort of secret to doing so?  Also, I am pretty sure the carb has been messed with since the PO gave me a handful of jets.  Does anyone know what the stock jetting is?

Thanks

Gday mate,I have a 88 RM 250J they are a cool bike, welcome to the club.
I dont recall there being any tricks to removing the kick starter off the shaft. It normally bolts on and is easy to pull off the shaft splines by hand.
But if it helps refer this weblink:

It has expanded diagrams of the parts.

Also the carburetor parts are listed on this site but you might need to buy them off the local Mikuni agent or Ebay.
I would recommend investing in a genuine Suzuki  owners manual it has all the jetting specs etc and theres normally heaps for sale on Ebay.

Cheers
Craig

Thanks,
I kind of figured it should just come off the splines.  I have never had a issue pulling any other kicker off before but for whatever reason this one does not want to come more than half way off.

I had to use a 2 jaw puller to get the kicker off.  Good news is that the clutch is now fixed, I think.  At least now the lever pulls.  Just waiting on a new water pump and head gasket.  Does anyone know if these cylinders are plated with anything?  I am assuming to refresh the top end I will need to re sleeve?

Thanks again

If you are doing the topend you might as well do the bottom as well.
( rodkit bigend bearings etc etc).

That's what I figured. Next question,  If there is a little play in the magneto does that mean that side crank bearing is shot?  I dont think any of my other bikes have any play but I dont really remember.  Sorry if these are stupid questions, I am waiting for my manual to ship to me.
