Australia's iconic home of motorcycle sport, the State Motorcycle Sports Complex, will welcome the nation’s best motocross riders when Round 3 of the 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals takes place at Broadford on Sunday, May 19.
Broadford’s motocross track has been completely rebuilt over the past month with tons of soil having been dumped and shaped into the track.
Broadford
’s State Motorcycle Sports Complex is owned and managed by Motorcycling Victoria, the State Controlling Body for motorcycle sport.
“A lot of preparation has been done to the track to get it ready for the MX Nationals." Broadford’s State Motorcycle Sports Complex manager Justin Bromley said. "We have also built a new top section of the track, which hasn’t been used since the last World 500cc Motocross Grand Prix in 2000.
“This has added an additional tabletop to the track as well as a few new turns, carving beams and whoops, in addition to about 300 metres of new track,” Justin added.
There has also been significant investment into the existing irrigation system, allowing for greater control of water management which will also minimise wastage.
“The new irrigation system will also significantly reduce the amount of time it will take to water the track, which will also allow for no disruptions to on-track activities,” Justin said.
“As part of the redevelopment, there is also a new mechanics area, which is located on top of Turn 3, ensuring that riders and their teams can communicate quicker, clearer and safer than ever before."
Due to the undulating nature of the track there are countless vantage points for spectator viewing, especially on top of the hill where you will be able to view the new top section up close; along the back-straight where you will be able to watch riders hit two tabletops, and alongside the Media Centre, which provides great views of the technical section halfway up the hill.
“All in all there is not a bad seat in the house!” Justin added.
Additional food and beverage locations have been added closer to the public areas.
“Developing a track of this standard is geared around future-proofing the facility. Not only will this allow us to host events such as the MX Nationals, but offer and industry-leading facility for our current MV-affiliated clubs and users,” Justin continued.
“The redevelopment of the motocross track will keep us headed in the right direction to offer industry-leading facilities across the entire State Motorcycle Sports Complex.
MV’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Andrew Weiss, has also been considerably impressed with the latest redevelopments to the motocross track at Broadford.
“The motocross track is in the best condition it has ever been. A lot of hard work has gone into bring the track up to a world-class standard. Weiss stated.
“It will be great to showcase the revamped surface at the MX Nationals on the weekend, and we will be working hard to maintain the quality and integrity of the facility all year round.
“All the MV staff at the SMSC have been working extremely hard to make sure that the track is at its best and will continue to do so, so that we can show off what is a wonderful facility," he added.
Motorcycling Victoria will also be holding a Minikhana Come ‘n’ Try Session at Broadford on Sunday, May 19.
“The session will be on the 50s track close to the lower entry gate,” MV’s Sport & Development Manager Paul Bray said.
“We have support from Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki who will provide some of their fun bikes to allow newcomers to the sport of motorcycling the chance to try out their next bike of choice!
“We also have a number of accredited coaches to assist kids and parents with information on bikes and gear to those interested in having a go - there is no reason to bring along your own bikes.”
“Any junior rider that is under 12-years-old that has started riding, and has their own gear, can also come along and enjoy a few laps before heading up to watch the main show on the motocross track,” Bray concluded.
