KX 250 1984 replacement clutch plates?
« on: May 20, 2013, 06:51:40 PM »
Gents,

To fix a grabby 84 KX clutch. What plates would you recommend?

Thanks Pete and Carl

They were always noted for their digital clutch... either on or off. I just run genuine plates in mine

Thanks Steve.

So I take it when you put the OEM plates in the clutch is still an on off type.

If your existing plates are within the recommended range
Scrub the fibre plates clean I use an oldtooth brush
Lightly bead blast the metals
Provided the baskets are ok and the rest of the actuation system is good
The blasting of the metals be they steel or alloy will fix the problem.

Hi Pete,  yes even with brand new OEM plates it is still on and off... it has a very small operating range.  I was thinking it may be the push rod / lever arrangement that causes it because the 84 500 clutch is beautiful and progressive and it uses the same plates.

I used a late model Honda CR clutch lever & perch, it has a shorter distance between cable nipple and lever pivot bolt (about 22mm compared to 30mm) , the ratio change makes the pull much lighter but also makes the action much more progressive.

It's only noticeable when I take off normally and slowly, dont notice it on starts. I guess I could put up with it but I will try what everyone has said.
Has anyone tried after market plates as well or just OEM?

And John do you know what year and model the leaver and perch is off?

Yeh its the same with mine. Starts are ok but when taking off slowly it grabs and shudders. John's lever change could help I reckon

Sorry I'm not sure which models, the first lever I bought were just called EZ-pull clutch lever, the advert said they were late CR Honda copies.  They were cheap and broke easily, now I have Moose Racing lever & perches that are 3-way adjustable, so you can adjust the amount of progressiveness and lever resistance to your liking.

Pete / Carl ...

What did you come up with guys? My 83 KX250 clutch doesn't grab (aftermarket EBC plates and springs), but I need to be popeye to pull the lever ...

Am interested in those EZ Pull lever/perch setups...

I am running standard springs in mine and its nice and light - no problems with operation apart from a very short engagement throw. You get used to it after a while but it would be a prick if riding vinduro or on trails.
