Those guys should be ashamed not proud. Beating an 81 model lawnmower technology bike in std trim. With state of the art technology modded to buggery by 3 mph. Admitedly it is KTM vs Honda. But 27 years should of cought up with the great white god of bikes by now. Or was the KTM just so far ahead. I think the latter.
But i don't think they have beat it yet? check the times but it will only be a matter of time im sure as you said technology has caught up.And it only took 27yrs ;D

from the information ive read there was a stock KTM 495 that did 199 KPH

i find it hard to believe that this KTM was the fastest bike up intil now. what about one of those new ATK 700 (are they 600 or 700? im not sure now) cc 2 strokes. wouldnt they be faster than a early 80's KTM 495?

I have a shootout in a mag somewhere and I remember that the KTM495 was the fastest bike for those that had the balls but didnt handle as good on a mx track, but the writer did keep mentioning the power it had, he must have liked the scare factor.. ;D

The thing to remember is the KTM makes a lot of power reasonably high in the rpm band. This allows a high top speed and causes some of the grief on the MX track. All bikes since produce power lower in the scale, much better for it`s intended use  of MX but handycaps the top speed. This is why no bike is able
to achieve a similar speed, they`re better to suited to MX. KTM themselves realize this and a test was done 10 years later with a 540 XC which I think with minor changes only went 108 mph. (around 96 in standard trim).There`s more to getting around MX tracks then sheer horsepower and all the manufacturers design their power output to suit what riders need and can handle usefully.

And to add another 'dirt bike' to the list, check out the Le Touquet reports on various websites.

from the BMW site:  "BMW wins at Le Touquet!
For the first time, a BMW rider on an HP2 Enduro wins the ‘holeshot’ prize at Le Touquet beach race. In heavy wind and rain, and at speeds approaching 200 km/h on the sand, local rider Jean-Charles Lenain beats 922 other riders to the end of the three-mile (4.5 kilometre) straight at Merlimont."

200kph is about 124.3mph, and admittedly, it is a modern, Big bore 'dirtbike'.

More of an update on the BMW
BMW Husqvarna Motorsport is preparing to send a prototype bike into action for the first time in the upcoming round of the FIM Enduro
World Championship (EWC) in Lovere, Italy on 22nd/23rd May.

The bike, which will compete in the E2 class at the event, is built around the Husqvarna chassis concept and powered by the innovative and highly capable 450 cc four-stroke engine developed by BMW Motorrad.

Rainer Thoma, President and CEO of Husqvarna Motorcycles, explains the decision: “Back in February we signed up to race in the E2 class of the Enduro World Championship under the new name BMW Husqvarna Motorsport. This collaboration of BMW Motorrad and Husqvarna Motorcycles aims to pool the two brands’ expertise in off-road competition for 450 cc four-stroke machines.

"The forthcoming debut appearance of the prototype bike is the logical next step following a very promising phase of testing. Although our leading rider Juha Salminen will have to sit out this coming weekend through injury, we’re approaching the event in optimistic mood with our prototype bike, our other regular rider Marko Tarkkala and stand-in man Andreas Lettenbichler.”

Over the past few months, the people at the Husqvarna Motorcycles development department have been working closely with specialists at BMW Motorrad and Speedbrain to develop a bike combining the Husqvarna chassis concept with the innovative and accomplished 450 cc four-stroke engine developed by BMW Motorrad. The testing phase, which got underway at the start of the year, is now completed, and the bike will be entered in competition from this weekend.

“Our aim for the 2010 season was to be fighting for the title in the E2 class of the Enduro World Championship with the BMW Husqvarna Motorsport team,” adds BMW Motorrad Motorsport Director Berthold Hauser.

“With Juha’s injury and his absence from the next race as a result, that’s going to be tough. In order to be successful despite this setback, it’s imperative that we make best possible use of the available synergies. With the testing phase completed the aim now is to use this genuine Husqvarna with BMW G 450 X drive concept to be up there fighting for success and victories in the sporting arena.”

BMW Motorrad Motorsport will remain actively involved in off-road competition with the BMW G 450 X. The team is planning to continue racing the bike in the European and the German Cross Country Championship and a range of Extreme Enduro events. Meanwhile, the Husqvarna CH Racing team will continue to compete in the E1 and E3 classes of the FIM Enduro World Championship. The Supermoto and Motocross segments will also remain under the Husqvarna banner.

Brad (Mr KTM) Lewis had a twin carb 495 running alcohol with a GSXR 750 clutch fitted that ran 11's over the quater with myself at the bars.
Current bikes. KTM MC 250 77 Husky CR 360 77, Husky 82 420 Auto Bitsa XR 200 project. Dont need a pickle just need to ride my motorcickle

I have no real idea of top speed we did, I'm sure to run 11's even high 11's you have to be around 240km but I could be wrong. We had to run the gsxr clutch as the standard one just melted we also ran a modified TZ rear wheel with a tiny sprocket and slick road race tire. We also had this mad low pipe that was like 125mm in the belly section.
Pulled harder than an 15 year old reading penthouse.

Mick, Chris did high 11s on a bog stock Husky XC500.The 106mph trap speed was achieved in 5th gear. He was clicking into top going through the traps. I'll show you the timecards one day.

Bill Nolan would be the man to ask as he won a national title on one.
The bike belonged to Brad Lewis.
Brad and his brother are top blokes and really know their KTM's.
Bill made some mods to the bike but only to get it to handle better.
Brad's brother made an exhaust pipe that produced more power which made the bike show all three number plates up a straight.

As the present owner of a G450 X - my PE 400 would blow it away with a fouled spark plug - maybe I'm doing something wrong ?

I've ridden and raced plenty of bikes both old and new and the only thing that can match those older KTM's was the last twin shock Husky XC 500.
A few years ago I used to ride the Narrabri cross country just for fun on a 390 KTM. The race had some very long straight bits and a fair bit of black soil roads. The looks of disbelieve as I almost sucked them off their new 4 stroke 450's etc even XR 650 just sailed past them, at the end of day a few older guys would come up and asked questions. The only non stock part was 15 tooth front sprocket.
The joke was if you could see a bike coming onto the road section no matter what it was you passed it thou there. Even the pro outright winner lapped me just before it one day and I passed him back with ease back in the road section he shock his head as I went by. A good XR 650 is good for 150KM on dirt so this thing was good for 170km easy.

My pe400's can do 110 to 130 on the stock gearing but that is quick through the bush my 400x spins the rear wheel at 100km and wheel is still up in 5th one of the 82hp maico 700's if I could save enough $$ I'd buy one so beasty really makes all my other bikes look like idiots but they are diffenent machines. ;)
