Urban Myth???  When I was a lad read an article re a guy flat stick on his CR480/500 in the Alice/Finke race - was absolutely gob smacked when he looked over his shoulder - guy on the 495 KTM dropped a cog and passed him - then kept going!!!!

Anyways - helps the legend if not true  :D

My pe400's can do 110 to 130 on the stock gearing but that is quick through the bush my 400x spins the rear wheel at 100km and wheel is still up in 5th one of the 82hp maico 700's if I could save enough $$ I'd buy one so beasty really makes all my other bikes look like idiots but they are diffenent machines.
With respect Michael, I own a PE400, have owned '81 490 and '84 500 Maicos, won a club championship on XC500 Husky and have ridden a 495 KTM. As good as the PE400 is (a very good bike), it's not in the same ballpark as those other bikes as far as out and out drag racing grunt. My money's still on the Husky XC500 (the 6 speed trans is the key in their good acceleration) with maybe the KTM second. As Slakewell well knows, my '84 SC500 Maico was a ball tearer in the HP department too so seeing the bike will be at CD7 with it's good 'ol boy new owner, lets do the drag race thing and see who's king of the hill. ;D

Yes I understand that Firko, you have a 400 I know but you don't want to sell it if you did I have a nos speedo and indicator indicator to put on it or I can put them on one of mine.

I don't want to sell my 400's either would be interesting I have always read that the 495 ktm is the one but wouldn't doubt the xc500 either for a big top speed.

Just found this very old post so thought it would be worth digging up, top speed always being an interesting topic.

The current record is held by a KX500, google "card board robot KX500" to see the current record holder. Unfortunately, I think really goes against the spirit of what this is about.
Knowing the original record was done on an otherwise stock bike, (stock plastics, suspension even tyres) the KX500 has gone way too far.
Not only has the thing been radically lowered, it has skinny road tyres and most of it's bodywork removed, a dirt bike? I don't think so.

I recently emailed Maico International with interest about doing a record attempt, as after doing quite a bit of research I figured a new Maico 700 (the special model soon to be released) with a claimed 100HP would be an awesome base for such a record.
Unfortunately for me, they already have someone in house who is aiming for the same record, so it looks as if their support is going that way.
Will be interesting to see how they go with the record, the new 700 should be able to smash through it while looking very much like a dirtbike.
