i think the price is excellent considering how much it would cost to restore one of these. i challenge anyone to build one of same quality for less.

its just a shitty market

What a project cost to build, and what $ it will sell for are almost always two very different figures. Most nice 125's are being offered for much less than $3k at the moment. I wish the bloke good luck with the sale, but the bike is overpriced.

Yep.

I'd pay $3k for that bike if it was as good as it looks on first glance.
But when you look closer, you see the frame isn't the right colour, the engine bolts are all painted over, the pipe's dented, its got cheap steel handlebars and a number of other little things wrong (rear brake return spring, crappy front tyre, etc). For $3k, you'd put up with a few of those things, but not all of them.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Easily under $3000 inc purchase price. Absolutely everything rebuilt from top to bottom

Any chance of breaking that down, including purchase price?  * I'm genuinely interested.*

it's a couple of years now, but..

$400 bike purchase
$300 machine work
$300 bearings and seals
$200 tyres/tubes
$140 rebuild shock
$100 plastics
$200 bars/levers/throttle/grips
$200 chain sprockets
$70 rod kit
$100 piston kit
$100 cables
$40 paint
$100 decals
$100 spokes
$100 kickstart assembly
$100 airbox boot

I painted everything myself, relaced the wheels myself after polishing the rims, rebuilt the engine with guidance from Vandy, and made a muffler from scratch.

I realise YZ125's are relatively cheap to restore, but I reckon you could more than double this figure if you just went and ordered everything from the one place without shopping around and then had someone else do all the rebuild work for you.

Some of those prices are cheap. Are the spokes from China? I have to pay $350 for a set of stainless spokes. A lot more for a full set of plastics. Number boards cost me $100-120. Did you do the number boards yourself? Did you also paint the tank yourself? I couldn't paint a tank and make it look good. It would look more like it was painted with a mop! Seat foam and base? Forks? Original carby? Brake shoes? Swingarm bushes, air filter? I'm helping a friend do his kx250a5 and he will have to spend lots more than that. It will be the first bike I will keep tabs on what has to be spent. Mind you this is where I get the  "one mans race ready, another man's junk" call from. This was a rider but everything is stuffed. From broken frame in multiple places to welded sprocket and gear lever.
