yes Craig - they were yours!

Geoff - when paying by Paypal I often get confirmation that my payment has been accepted by the seller?

An option might be to start a 'case' against the seller. I had one seller recently that wouldn't respond till I did this; eBay contacts them direct on your behalf.

Check paypal, you may still be covered for non-supply like eBay if you proceed.

That is after he sends the invoice in the correct currency!

It was a $399 US item, so that is a big difference.  The radar is up a little because he keeps responding to my personal email while I keep sending messages through eBay. (no trail)
I'm not quite with you on the $139 difference. Are you paying $139us difference purely because its been converted to euros?
PayPal is good for one thing, some good security. Seeing as the purchase was done through eBay and paying PayPal you are covered. Make sure it's sent airmail of course. If you don't see it in a couple of weeks then start a dispute. If he can't prove he has sent it ( tracking) then they will take the money back off him.

Brad,

The auction price was $399 US and when he setup the billing to his correct PayPal email he invoiced me for 399 euros.  That's a nice bonus.  ;D

I am awaiting his reply about correcting the currency.  Hopefully it all works out or maybe it will show up two months later all busted up.

OK  He fixed the currency problem and I made the payment through PayPal, but this is outside of eBay (I know they own both), so did I just lose all my buyer protection?  I noted the eBay item number, auction ending date and my user ID with the PayPal payment, but I'm still not feeling really great about this whole thing.

I certainly would have wanted to go through ebay but the reason you go through paypal is to be covered. I think you are safe. Maybe you should have a read of the paypal terms and conditions.
