Classic Dirt Bike Issue 25

Not sure why I keep buying this, as a VMX magazine its like throwing a starving Ethiopian a piece of wax fruit.

Almost unreadable this time, I think I have seen the same shot of Fairey Castle about 10 years running, never ending bloody trials bikes and woo hoo a Maico 490, I thought I had gone back to the future and the dawn of VMX Journalism.

However if you have a fetish for flogged 80s Fantic trials bikes and articles in black and white then it may be a good read.

I'm a bit of a junky for classic motocross magazines but I've not bothered to renew my sub on Classic Dirt Bike. The lack of quality and piss poor feature bike candidates, (how many 490 Maico and Cheney BSA articles do we need to read?) and innacurate text (The Suzuki RM S was a factory race kitted RM??? ::)) finally got the better of me. I can understand the trials content because of the popularity of that sport in the UK but even that coverage is poor at best. I wonder how much longer it can last?

 Even though I've got a little to do with VMX magazine, I still reckon it's in a class of its own. Mitch Boehms Moto Retro Illustrated is a quality magazine as well but I have a sneaky feeling that we've seen the last of it.

The current editor of CDB Tim Britton is bloody useless  ::) i think his limited participation with the off road world has been through trials . His constant self effacing about his riding ability or his mechanical aptitude wears a bit thin and for your info Tim your a crap editor of a classic dirt bike mag to mate  :-*

And yes the content of the mag gets worse every issue IMHO , that pathetic CanAm budget project WTF was that all about  ??? i am a self confessed hoarder but the heap of shit he started with ( and paid money for  :o ) would have found its way straight into my scrap bin  ;) he then proceeds to tip a shed load of money into it ( oh but it was all done on the cheap  ::) yeah right the average bloke doesn't have access to free soda blasting , welding , painting and parts in exchange for a plug in the magazine ) Managed to drag the process out over 4 or 5 issues and ends up with an end result that would not look out of place on Marks swapmeet Roach of the month  ;D. Reporting events in a quarterly is a waste of time especially when they are poorly written .

But i suppose i will keep on buying it , there are the occasional good article but over all it appears that the whole mag is put together by somone whos knowledge of VMX is what they find with a cursory glance at the web and the rest made up as it goes along  ::)

I think VMX is still head and shoulders above most things with the exception of Classic Racer and Practical Sportsbike .... lets just say most things dirt wise.

Though there have been so recycled Fairy Castle, Rod Spray and 'rough bikes that nobody has heard of' articles creeping into VMX magazine from Pomgolia.

Events like Farliegh, CDs, the Nats and the bigger Seppo events deserve a page or 3 but its those smaller events where the results are 3 months out of date and you get 5 pics of the same wobbler ( probably because he let mr Britton date his sister in a past life ) that shit me .

Now theres an event down here this weekend Marc  ;) best be loading up the RB so you can come and give Liz a match up  ;D

Oh I keep trying to convince M&J to piss off those dodgy Chevs and that furking Dingo to make more room for my VMX projects on a bigger scale but its hard work mate. ;)

Yeah Rod's stuff is pretty good and the Poms have the population where a small number of specialists can make a living off the VMX scene. NZ is too small and you would starve to death as the Kiwis are tight bastards

I subscribe to CDB online via Zinio. I get it real cheap which suits me as there is the occasional interesting article but I sure wouldn't pay full price for it. I am just not that interested in dodgy old Brit trials bikes, but that's just me I guess. As for Moto Retro Illustrated it's a shame it hasn't really gotten going as I like it a lot. A different slant and flavour to VMX so not really competing in quite the same space and I for one would happily buy both.

Unfortunately, that arrangement fell apart in the weeks following Issue 6’s release, so we’re still in slow-’n-go mode.

Obviously, this isn’t ideal… for readers, for advertisers or for me. I’d like nothing more than to be able to do four issues per year, and from what I hear from many of you, you’d love the same thing.

 As a one-man show, I’m still looking for a partner for Moto Retro, and I’m talking to several people about the possibility – investors and publishing houses alike. If it happens, you’ll know immediately.

 As for Issue #7, I’m working on it and plan to have it ready sometime in January. Like all the other issues, it’ll be a mix of dirt, street and minibike culture from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, and the stories we have on deck are superb, as usual.

I have to agree that CDB has got a too heavy slant towards trials, but it has the odd good article. 

It's not a vmx magazine, although it has articles on the DT175, XT250 and Beta GS125 in the last three issues, but I like Classic Motorcycle Mechanics, helps me relive my early bike days (RZ350's etc) and my road race bikes (ZXR750 & ZX9) and it has some damn nice bikes in it and some good technical articles.  The KH400 in the June issue was pure porn  :)
