Rutherglen Grasstrack Victoria
« on: September 16, 2012, 10:04:35 pm »

Stuart Simmons on IT490.

Rutherglen grasstrack was an old trotting track and was 1 1/4 miles around. I used my speedway Weslake with a slip on springer back end and a 2 speed quick change gear box.

I think I ran 19 - 54 or something like that. The gearbox made the difference.
Me and Glen Bowles used to run 19-58 at Bendigo International on the Goddens.

I am not sure if the ratio is 1:1 or over. Myrtleford I used to run 18-58. when I came back in 99 I was running Paul Wheatlands gearing around 17-56. I remember racing with paul one night at Myrtleford and we changed the lead 6 times in 3 laps. I have never seen any other person hang off the fence for 3 laps like Paul did.

Undera 17-63 and the same at Mildura. I always had trouble on small tracks.

I always loved Pauls Philosophy; Alway win practice at all cost. It scares the shit out of them.

How cool to see a dirt track without a safety fence....you can tell it's not NSW ::). I couldn't think of a better place to watch the racing from than the tailgate of an HQ van (bottom photo).

Rutherglen Grasstrack 1981. Following day's newspaper story in the Border Morning Mail:

I managed to crash my RM125 into the two riders either side of me just off the starting line. Top left photo. They took off past me and somehow collided right in front of me. I had my head down and going flat out, so went straight into them and over the bars. Right in front of the grandstand. Even the local Channel 4 TV news got that one. There was much laughter apparently. I never did like the idea of disconnecting my brakes...
