N/E Victoria MX & DT Pics 70's & 80's
« on: June 15, 2012, 10:11:13 pm »
I raced my YZ80's & 125 in N/E Vic in the late 70's and early 80's and don't have one pic to show for it. I've started this thread for you to share your racing pics of places such as MX at Meriang/Myrtleford, Albury/Wodonga & Yarrawonga, DT at Tawonga, Bright, Wangaratta and even Wahgunyah. I'll start off with a few good ones I borrowed from Nobby25. So, show us what you've got.

"heres a pic of his back at Towonga 79  that was Brad Jones's YZ125D #1 on the right"

Awesome link Nobby.  I think I remember Darren Lavery .. he had a younger brother named (I think) Brett?  And didn't they own the Honda Dealership for a while?

;D Right ... with my memory being as farked as it is, I'm taking that as a win  ;D ;D

Great vid quality, pity there is no sound but still, great vid footage.  Both Brett and Darren were quick riders from my (fading fast) memory.  I do remember that event as I didn't move away from Wodonga until 1986.  I noticed he video is posted by Darren and titled "my last dirt bike ride" ... did he just give it up after then?

Simmo,I have just been in contact with Darren after many many years and after 28 years he's just got himself another dirt bike, a Husberg? I sent him a link to ozvmx, to maybe give him a thirst for the vintage stuff. ;)

Tex, I can't take credit for the pics, they're Nobby's.

I usually came in 4th behind Darren Lavery in most of the N/E Vic mini racers although I did get a second outright behind Peter Lee at Wodonga one time in 1980. I can't remember who the other guy was in the top 3.

I used to have a BMM newspaper clipping with a pic of the Lavery's riding at Fallon street, but it's long gone.

Simo, you didn't happen to go to Wodonga Tech with lil Nobby by any chance?

Awesome ... is that who is after the 79/80 bike you have posted a wanted ad for?  Would be great to see the Lavery boys back into it.

I did go to Wodonga Tech, graduated in 1980 but at this stage, I have no idea who Nobby or you are Woody.  PM me with real names if you want and I'll try to exercise my failing memory  ;D

Simmo, maybe these will jog the memory, :)
Trail bike riding as a sport at Tech school
Nobby Harding, teacher (no relation)
The "Rec" track next to the horse race track
"Laurence st" track
I had the only RM250C2 in Wodonga
I raced the only KX250A5 in Wodonga
Graduated? in 77, Bro Chris in 81 both known as "Nobby"
Who am I ? :D :D :D :D :D (my names my email, in profile)
the wanted ad is not for Darren.
and How did you go with the CVan trip? your offer of transporting it to Queensy was tempting, but I just had too much going on.
Cheers Nob

Wow some do jog the memory.  I remember riding my YZ125F for a sport class at Wodonga Tech .. what a fantastic idea that was.  I can't remember who the teacher was though (are you saying it was Knobby Harding?) but I recall riding at a property known as Carolls I think ... way down on the river.
I also recall the Rec Track on what used to be called Pearce St .. it was dusty little place from memory.
I rode the Lawrence Street track many many times particularly after moving to 8 Stevenson Street which was 50 metres from the track.  It was my favourite haunt.   Had my very first car roll over at Lawrence Street .. a 56 small window VW Beetle …. Probably worth a bit these days  ::).  We used to also ride all over Hunchback , out to Barny and Stanley.  And in the other direction, out to the old Wodonga Stock Route as well.  Was chased many a time by the local constabulary .. they could never catch me when I was on my CR, YZ or RM but if I was tooling around on one of the many SL/XL125's that seemed to be around in the day, I sometimes did get caught.
I raced/rode my ex Steve Whitehouse YZ125F but got rid of it after 6 months and moved onto an RM125N and man it flew.  And handling was superb in comparison with the YZ.
I finished year 12 in 1980 but I think your younger brother Chris would know my younger brother Roger as he was in the same classes as him apparently
I don’t recall your race bikes but a mate of mine had a RM400C2 which was a pretty special piece of kit but I think there were a couple of them around.  Did you know a rider by the name of (stretching the memory here) Wayne Schultz … from out Lavington way .. might have been Ettamogah.  I thought Wayne had an RM125C2 and RM250C2 as well .. but he wasn’t from Wodonga so that would still leave you with the only one.

The caravan trip went okay, could have been better but we got home safe and sound with the caravan in relatively one piece, thanks for asking.  Would have been great to catch up and maybe we still can if you are going to CD9?  Or when I’m back down that way some other time?

Anyway, thanks again for the memories Nobby, they really are an unexpected bonus of being a member of Ozvmx  :) :) :)
