What Yamaha colour is this?
« on: April 22, 2012, 01:21:40 pm »
Trying to find out the name of this colour from a Yamaha DT. The problem I have is trying to determine the exact year of my bike. This part is the same colour as my bike vin number DT1F-166XXX. What year could my bike be?

The DT1F prefix is common to DT1, DT2 and DT3 motors. The picture of your bike is showing the normal graphics scheme for a DT3 but in a strange colour. DT2 didn't have the curved stripe on the tank (tank was plain red with solid "YAMAHA") and red was darker than that red on that headlight support photo.
Main difference (mechanically) between DT2 and DT3 is the DT2 has a 19" front wheel, DT3 has 21" wheel
Here's a pic of a DT2

The '69 DT1-B was candy apple gold, the 1970 DT1-C was painted a candy apple red style colour called Brilliant Red. The top photo that Zorros posted is a '72 DT2 (I think...the bike in the photo looks a bit odd, we didn't get those graphics on the DT2...see below). I've never seen the rear blinkers mounted where they are. The handlebar mounted blinkers were only on some very early Aussie DT1-B and US imports. They didn't pass Aussie ADR's once blinkers became mandatory so Yamaha mounted them in the traditional between the upper and lower triple clamps. The 1973 DT2's were green w/black and white graphics see bottom photo

Aussie release DT2

A DT3 with a non Australian/Oceania OEM replacement colour set, possibly an insurance claim rebuild. I have seen over the years in older motorcycle shops and stalls at swap meets the odd colour pictured, in tank, both separate badge and sticker variants, headlight stays and headlight shell, oil tank and sidecovers. I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

The candy-apple red with pinkish tinge, is fairly common on later (1973?) models.

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Well there you go. I wrote to Yamaha and they were a great help. They sent me an official letter stating when it was made, March 1971 and that it complies with ADR rules of that era. Duilio Pianca from Yamaha Customer Relations Department is a great guy.

Firko, my mate in the home town had a pure-red 1972 DT2 (solid red with white YAMAHA logo), and I also saw another one being scrambled at Sunbury.

Goddam, but the Yammie trailbikes were the best!!!!
