Ray Owen
« on: March 12, 2012, 04:36:50 pm »
G-day All, have been trying to find a photo i saw somewhere on the forum last year of Ray Owen racing a slider in a scramble event. The picture shows him with his bum in the air off the bike but he is still hanging on to bars and knowing him, still on the gas. It's a great shot and would like to use photo at HBBB this easter.......  Regards  Les

JAP 454   mentioned that photo in a post about First Sliders,   dont think it was shown on here,   he refered to OBA, which is Old Bike Australia magazine, there was also a couple in an old Two Wheels i've got if they're any use to ya.
Cheers KB

Go to Vintage Track page 2 then click on Who's who of Speedway Past pages 4/5. There is a fair bit on Ray Owen there. Ray was good mates with the late Harry Rowe who in turn was my Dads best mate. Ray's son in law built my first slider. Pics of it in Dirt Track Images. Funny man is our Ray. Ride anything ;D

Thanks Mark for the directions to those couple of pages you mentioned. There was the photo i was talking about, great shot.!!!
Mark i also read on one off those pages you have some footage of a Grasstrack event at Cambellfield in the 60's of Ray. We are showing a few video's on the night of the re-union of different things etc. just wondering if a copy of Cambellfield is available to show on the night too. Would be great to see .................  regards Les

Ray Owen is definitely the "Slider" pioneer in OZ.
My father always said, that little bastard can ride a bike, in admiration of course.
A true legend of the sport.
There are people out there who think Mark's blood is worth spilling, I'm not one of them.
Hope you're well Mark.

Yeah your right on there about Ray the pioneer. Some of the stories he has told me of the early days just ring with braveheart. He said of some of his grasstrack days with huge sprockets that you had to be careful leaning over to far because the sprocket dug into the track but true to Ray he keeped the power on and won anyway. Even his last racing years  agains't Rod Hunter, Chris Kelly and Co he could still show em how it was done....... Really been no other like him since that could win in all diciplines....... regards les
