RL250 project

Hi all, I have just picked up an 1974 RL250 as my first trials project, I got a pair of fibreglass Beamish side covers with the bike but prefer the original ones, so if any one knows where after market RL side covers can be found please let me know. Also I need front and rear guards and carb to airbox hose. Any help or wisdom RE these bikes would be great.

Have a look on the trials australia site under twinshock trials, there is/was a thread called rl mania or something similar which had a young guy who was making fibreglass replica guards etc for his & others bikes

Also need for this bike a rear brake plate,

I have etc RL parts like new hubs,  wheels and frame + forks if any one is chasing parts.

I'm thinking of  buying two Suzuki RL250's tomorrow

Whats are these bikes like, are they as good as say a TY?

1 bike is a runner ( going ) - 75 model (needs general tidy up), the other bike is a basket case compliance plated 76 model, frame totally repainted, motor reconditioned and ready to go back in, all complete wheels, forks, tank seat swing arm, shocks  plus another share motor


can pick up for 800 bucks, Is that good buying?

Not as good as a TY, not enough weight over the front wheel.
The TY was the best of the japanese trials bikes so the others all feel not quite right

I don`t think its an option if the bikes where the best in there day or worst bike, The RL is a nice looking bike, if you like it and your having fun so be it.

The RL Suzuki is a great looking bike. IMO the RL and KT both look better than the TYs.

The reality is that TY is just soooooooooo far ahead when riding trials that there is just no comparison. The KT is better than the RL but both are just not in the 'race' so to speak against the TY. Both the KT and RL can be improved by changing frame geometry. The RL in particular is very long in the wheelbase and its steering is very ponderous in tight stuff. The TY just does things so easily for the rider compared to the RL and KT.

The KT and RL make great trial/trail bikes like the Bultaco Alpina and Montesa Cota T models but as a pure trials bike you would have be a diehard Suzuki or Kawa person to choose one over the TY.

Having said all that the RL and KT are fantastic looking bikes when restored. That original model RL with the aluminium tank is a work of art. Unfortunately it was more a marketing exercise instead of a development for competition by a top level international rider like the TY was.

Ive an RL250 and though I'm no trials rider by any stretch of the imagination the bike is nothing but a joy to ride 8) be it slowly pottering around or on medium paced trail rides it does all I ask (albeit, all I'm capable of :P) Below is a pic of my brothers RL and below that is mine. I love em'.

Doc you sound like you have hit the exact type of riding that the RL is perfect for.

Your brothers restored bike is a joy to look at and he should be very proud of a bueatiful job. Your bike is also an outstanding example. The RLs are bullet proof as far as reliability goes.

As I said it is only in actual trials competition that the TY is more ideal and makes ;ife for the rider a little easier. For general all round 'trials' type trail riding an RL is in its element.
