Goldcoast MX Club
« on: November 30, 2011, 02:42:09 pm »
From FULLNOISE :: Chris Urquhart URGENT: Council decided last night that Goldcoast Mxclub will shut in 2 weeks!!! After years of working with them and jumping through hoops they are pulling the pin. With over 1000 club members and no tack to ride this is not good enough. We need everyone at the track Saturday as media etc is being arranged now (stay posted for time) if you cant support your club now you cant complain when you have nowhere to ride. Spread the word!..

Pretty piss poor from a council that has just be given the Commonwealth games and is about to have 750 mill in infrastructure to be spend by the state government!!!

It is typical of any political parties outlook on motorcycling with their head in the sand look at "bikies" in general.

We had only just joined Stanmore Park and it is a fantastic venue for racing and riding in general with practice on ever weekend that racing is not.

Good on you again Gold Coast council for giving us all someone too look up to and be inspired by!

I can't believe the Wankers shut the only 2 mx tracks (Stanmore & Reedy Creek) down in the area at the same time!
These  tracks have been there since '76/'77 when there wasn't a house in sight and now more than 2000 members have nowhere to ride.
The bike shop i work in along with all the others in the area will be greaty affected by this also... as if times aren't tough enough already!!

Are they protesting at the tracks on Saturday? I might get the big 500 out and go up and down the road with a sign saying ' no where to ride but on your road now' or something like that. Why are sports where two teams sniff each others bums get all the help in the world when motocross gets next to nothing?

Stew good article, reads to me that some in the council are peed at developers.
The money motorsports brings into town !! councils are crazy-well actually the developers are greedy  :(

How ironic-quote: The Australian Motorcycle Expo Gold Coast will be held on 17-19 February, 2012.
Maybe a good protest point !!
cheers A

From reading the magazine aticle, it's not council closing it down but the owner/devoloper, from what I understand this area has been owned by devolopers for at least the last 10 years and had not built on the land until council found another site for the club, this was suposed to happen about 2 years ago, but the devoloper gave council an extention until suitable replacement was found, council haven't done anything about it, and the devoloper has had enough of the delays.

I think this is only Reedy Creek and not Stanmore. Stanmore is in a council "green zone" but noise and dust is the main issue, from what has been told at club meetings?

Same issue happened to the Gold Coast kart club (developer) and the council had earmarked land for that club as well, 4 years on still no track!!

The  Gold Coast Council is Hell bent of closing this track down for Future development and same can be said for the Archery Club next door.

The land that Stanmore and the adjacent Archery club are on was given/bequeithed to either the council or Qld government in the late 60's/early 70's by the then land owner to be used for recreation/parks etc.....NO developer can build anything on them as far as I know and if they are going to then some pretty big dodgy deals have been done.....the Gold Coast City Council in recent years has had a Royal Commision into its dodgy deals and there was alot of red faces.....obviously nothin's changed.
QVMX.....Australia's #1 VMX club......leading the way.

As time has passed and the land has changed from ownership.... Council to Council the original deal ( agreement ) records  have been  lost  ??? from what I make of it.
They need to track down the local member of council of the time  ;) to get  the facts.

Heres A pie in the sky idea...Trust me, I had many great races at stanmore in the mid 90s, and im not ready to let them go, but how about this idea?
The clubs in question say they have approx. 2000 members, if those members can all afford to chip in $100 each, that would give them A considerable amount towards buying their own block of land. I am certain that land could be purchased  somewhere inland around the border. Yes, there would be more travelling, but whats the alternative? I believe that the local bike shops and industry related businesses would contribute to the cause, increasing the revinue even more (you could even put livestock on adjistment for A small fee, keeping the grass down). The councils SHOULD be interested in supporting this idea, because they can wash their hands of the whole situation, providing they approve the project.
Insurance should not be A problem, A friend of mine runs Lytton track with their own insurance, they have not had A single problem with regards to claims.
M.A has a responsability to promote & grow the sport, possibly offering A grant to assist as well.
There is an opportunity to possibly become the masters of our own destinity if the right people with the drive to make it happen, make it happen.
Maybe i'm just dreaming...

its been going to happen for a while and neither were supposed to be closed until the new track up behind yatala drive in in one of the old quarries was opened.wyaralong is supposed to open on the 18th of this month looks like the government trying to push both clubs to race at their facility.with 2000 members and spectator fees thats a pretty good income for them straight off the bat.cheers.
