DA, what a great bloke, he did so much in the 70's for up & coming Speedway riders in & around Sydney.
One of the sadest things I can remember when his son Brett lost his life in England.
Great photo's & history Firko, love the Moorebank stuff, went there a lot as a kid.
Cheers.

Thanks Steve,l I had my first race at Moorebank. I didn't particularly like it but it's got a firm place in our motocross history. I couldn't agree more about both Denis and Laurie Alderton, good blokes. Denis never really got over Brett's death.

Here's one for you.....

Yeehah, when I saw the Hazell & Moore and Adams & Sons adds I thought one of Curly Norms would have been in there somewhere.
Revs I guess?
Cheers, that's made my day.

Coming from around that area but a little bit too late to have ventured there, I would love to know exactly where it was.

Moorebank track was located withing the Holdsworthy Army base at Liverpool, south western Sydney. Jim Scaysbrook told me that the basics of the track are still there but it's badly eroded and grown over. Immediately after the track closed the area was supposedly used for tank training so you'd imagine the tanks would have wiped out most of the features.

When I was setting up for the first VMX open meeting in 1988, Geoff Eldridge and I had a meeting with the base commander over the possibility of us holding a one off vintage motocross meeting on the old course. Despite his enthusiasm for the idea, it was vetoed for security and logistical reasons. Unfortunately the days when the public could access an army base at will were long gone. :'(

There's some interesting names in this early Amaroo program. Ian Geohegan and Bob Morris from touring car racing to name just a couple.

Top stuff there , Firko, I did ride at Moorebank, once, on  a freaking NSU Max, that was interesting to say the least.
Memories of St George Club and Open  meetings there, Scaysie on a 500 ?? , can't remember, with all the rest of the guns of the day.
Oh and yeah, rider # 239 at Amaroo " Sid Crome " !!!  nearly as bad as the entrant at Woodstock, listed in the program as one " R.Sole" !!

Sid Crome-in the days before you could name your sponsors.
Tivoli in 1975/76 and ACU steward Noel Stitt wanted everyone to remove all stickers that didn't come on the bike. No Bell helmet, Gold Belt and even tyre stickers were banned.

Yeah thanks Tony (and Rossco, Mainline and others)....I haven't bothered ATM, I've been too busy with Christmas, doctor stuff and family runarounds to sit down and take the time to sort it. I've got a shitload of photos that Gus Priem kindly sent me to upload so that'll keep us entertained until the Christmas rush is over.
