South East Queensland Enduros - 1970 to 1988??
« on: September 01, 2011, 12:59:32 pm »
Hi Guys,

I'd like to know which of you forum members were around the Enduro scene in South East Queensland from the early 70's through to around 1985 or 1988.

Whether it was as a worker at events, a rider, a photographer or a sponsor, it doesn't matter.  I'd like to talk with you for a long term project I'm doing.

Whether you were involved around this time:

Or this time:

Post a reply, PM me, or email me at [email protected].    ;D

Thanks,

Tony Marshall

Started racing SEQ events around 83. I did the Annand & Thompson 6 day series ( 6 one day events from april to maybe october). I remember winning my class in 85 on Bathurst day... How did I remember that?... They had a black and white tv set up on a card table with a generator( in the middle of nowhere) so the special test timer guys could watch the race. If you got in early you could watch a few minutes of it... Nowdays everyone watches it in colour on their phone...

Who would have thought eh......TV on your phone. I remember being in Spain for the sidecarcross GP and the 125 Juniors were support. They had a TV set up on the bonnet of a car watching the World Cup soccer. Couldn't get them to the start for their races.
now back to the enduro thread-pity Geoff Udy isn't on this forum.......

Yeah, I'll give him a ring soon - I've slowly been contacting the original names from the era.   :)

Which class Fabulous ?

You should remember that one Tony , it was at Troy Speddings checkpoint at Sunshine Coast's round at Connondale.

Saw a lot of that Bathurst , ended up with Troy telling me to piss off and race ;D

Nah, sorry Mike, I didn't ride any enduros that year...   :'(

I'd dedicated 1985 to Drinking and Ferreting...   ;D

Or was that Drunken Ferreting??   ???

Either way, 1985 was a bit of a blur...   ::)

I rekon he's talking about the last round of 84 at Peachester Tony and you were there for that one.

I don't have the results for that one but I do have them for 85 and it was held in the 4th month.
Only 36 finishers in the 85 one .
Bathurst is later in the year.

Won my class in the 84 one , got a gold. ;D
Sad story because I was the only one left so I had to come first. ;D ;D

Wasted a heap of time watching Bathurst with Troy and then Houred out waiting for the Dairy Cows to cross the road so they gave me 5mins back which made me the WINNER :o
I still wind up me mates over that one , they all rekon I should hang my head.

I actually found my compulsory third party insurance extension reciept for that one last week..  (remember the thing we used to have to go into an SGIO office and pay $1 for).

Was that one postponed from earlier in the year?  the third party extension has a September (I think) date crossed out and a November date written in (and initialled by SGIO).

Question from left field re suitable bikes of that era. Were the XR200s any good or the IT200 that much better.
I have an '84 XR200 that i have restoed once and worn out again. Would it be worth doing again for vinduro or should I move on?.
I would love a KTM from the era but a bit hard to find exactly what I want ATM.

Similar experience here in Vic. must have been 87 or 88 I think.
I rocked into a checkpoint to see Bathurst on TV. It was an incentive to get to the next checkpoint with time up my sleeve so I could see some more.

Yes I rode SE Qld and Northern NSW one-day and two-day Enduros and 6 hour Pony Expresses from 1977 to 1980.
I was a rider, set the courses for a couple of NDMTC events and also took some photos. Bikes were IT175D, TY175 and hybrid RM250C/SP370. Events I rode were mostly run by Southside MCC, Northern Districts MTC, Sunshine Coast MCC, Reliability Trials Club of Brisbane and can't remember name of the club who ran the NSW events but they were held at Uki, Rappville and maybe others.
