Bench Talk: ;D
NORTON 500cc INTERNATIONAL ENGINE PART OF AN ABANDONED PROJECT. ACCORDING TO NORTON OWNERS CLUB UK OHC SPECIALIST IT IS AN EARLY 50's MODEL. IT HAS NO ENGINE NUMBER THE ONLY MARKING ON THE CASES IS NS610. IT APPARENTLY SPENT MOST OF IT'S LIFE AS A TEST BED ENGINE ENDING IT'S LIFE AT RMIT IN MELBOURNE IN THE MID 70's WHEN IT WAS SOLD TO THE PUBLIC. THE ENGINE WHEN I GOT WAS IN EXCEPTIONAL CONDITION WITH ALL THREADS, FINS AND CASTINGS IN PERFECT CONDITION THE FOLLOWING IS A LIST OF WHAT HAS BEEN DONE DO TO IT, IN NEARLY ALL CASES WORK WAS DONE DUE TO IT SITTING RATHER THAN WEAR. THE CAMBOX IS THE ONLY PART NOT DISMANTLED, VAPOUR BLASTED AND RECONDITIONED AS NEEDED.
BOTTOM END - New Mains, New Big End Bearing ( McIntosh NZ ) New Little End Bush, Conrod Polished and Crack Tested
BARREL - Slight Staining in Bore, I Bored it to 010" using a Genuine Piston, the Piston has been Ceramic Coated and fitted with a Gapless Ring
CYLINDER HEAD - New Valves, New Springs, New Caps and the Exhaust Thread has had a bronze insert - the original thread was OK though had a little movement when a new nut was tried in it so I had it sleeved
STAINLESS FASTENERS - The engine has new stainless fasteners throughout that are a faithful reproduction of the originals made in the UK, it also has a stainless bevel drive tube and gland nuts fitted with "O" rings to avoid leaks associated with the original design
EXTRAS - There are a few bits - a new magneto chain, stainless bits and gaskets for the magneto, stainless screws, bearing retainer and seals for the Cambox

THERE IS A BELT DRIVE PULLEY ON THE CRANK THAT CAN GO WITH IT AS IT HAS A DIFFERENT TAPER TO MOST OTHER NORTONS I WILL HAVE NO USE FOR IT, ALSO INCLUDED IS THE TT CARB AND BTH TT MAGNETO - THE ENGINE STAND IS NOT INCLUDED - THE TIMING COVER HAS A SMALL HOLE DRILLED IN IT TO ALLOW IT TO BORED ON CENTRE FOR A TACHO DRIVE BOSS - THIS CAN BE CHANGED FOR AN UNDRILLED ONE IF REQUIRED.
I HAVE RECEIPTS FOR MOST PARTS THAT ARE LISTED AND INSPECTION IS WELCOMED - ALL QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED ASAP - PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR A "BUY IT NOW" PRICE.
IT CAN BE PROFESSIONALLY CRATED FOR $50- AND CAN BE DROPPED AT A TRANSPORT DEPOT IN THE MELB METRO AREA FREE OF CHARGE - IGNORE PICK UP ONLY
Best is in the West !!

Jeez ! The price skyrocketed by $2500 in the last few seconds, I reckon he could probably afford to chuck in the engine stand now... ::)
Nostalgia's not what it used to be....

Nah its a bit early for me and there was pretty spirited bidding, buyer got good deal if it is what it is claimed to be.

You are dealing with a whole different league cheque book enthusiasts with old Brit race bikes. However there is hope, I noticed at recent Mid Western and Bonhams auctions in the States the prices were very soft, unless it has Brough or Vincent on the tank.
