Flat bearings for YZ250H Swingarm
« on: February 12, 2008, 01:37:44 pm »
Soo - the resto is slowly coming along.  The swingarm on the 250 is a bit butchered and the bearings and bushes etc have been removed and replaced by bronze bushes.  Very agricultural  :o.  I assume (perhaps incorrectly) that Mr Yamaha knew that the bearings and bushes worked better  ::).
I have got a 125 swingarm and all the parts are the same except the flat bearing that goes under the thrust cover.  Part number is 93342-22208 (item 2 on the rear arm parts list).  I am going to try to get a generic equivalent - anyone know dimensions  :-\.  Or should I not be such a tightwad and go to the Yamaha Shop :-[.
Trouble is if I have to buy the whole lot it is going to add up.
Any and all help gratefully recieved
Cheers

You must have ESPN or something ::).  I was just thinking I must give you a call.  Will probably do so on Friday if you aren't too busy.

Have to confess to achieving SFA since the last photo I sent you Hilly :-[.    I think mainline is even ahead of me now and he has only just started (well done Mainline if you are reading this).   I could offer life excuses, but have just been a slack prick.  I'm hoping all the 2 stroke fumes and all those pretty bikes at CD5 will get me motivated again.
Done a lot of thinking.  Last years tax return is about to come in, (that's how slack I am) so that should give me a cash injection.  I have pulled the motor totally apart and got all the bearings out except that f#$%er that holds the clutch actuator.  Discovered an existing crack in the left case when removing the bearings.  A piece about the size of a fingernail broken off where the sealing plug goes into the stator housing.  Super glue hopefully will do the trick.  Might post that as a question in resto tips.  Taking the crank in to get the big end replaced tomorrow.
2 swingarms and a head at the sandblasters at the moment.  Have to get some of those top swingarm pivot bushes turned up and paint/polish/sand the swingarm (still undecided).  Then I can mount the shock and swing arm.  Got NOS spoke sets and hubs etc are painted and ready to go.  Still deciding wether to buy polishing gear and persevere with the stone chipped rims ( that I have spent bloody hours sanding by hand already) or just buy new polished ones.
Few questions I might post up, like HTF to get the main cog off the end of the crank.  Once the big end is replaced I can put the bottom end back together and mount it in the frame.  Do I blast the cases before painting them too ?
Basically cash is the issue at the moment.  Maybe the missus will give me the baby bonus in September (I have been doing a few things) ;D ;D
That's about it.
You nodded off during that didn't you  ::)

Thanks for the encouragement Andrew - there is never any doubt that I will finish her off.  Hopefully the first one takes the longest as I have a couple of others to do when I'm finished.
Was the manifold NOS or 3R's.  What sort of reeds did you fit.  I've heard V force are pretty good.
What's wrong with the clutch ???

the manifold was a G item (no boost bottle)and the reeds were boyseen...before i fitted them she ran like a old dog and had a massive flat spot in the midrange, now shes like a completely diffrent bike, more like a 465....the clutch shaft keeps on popping out which apperently was a common accurance with this model so me mate reckons..its caused by the little pop rivet in the side of the case where the shaft goes down being worn out so me mate reckons again ::)....have you had this sort of problem with your clutch... :)

Yep,
Mine's worn out too.  Cheap as chips.  On the 125H I converted it to a screw with a tap.  I've still got the pin that I bought for the 125, so I'm going to put that in.  Had a hell of a time getting the old pin out of the 125 as it is hardened steel.  I knew something was wrong with the 250 when it the actuator came out in my hand.  I guess drilling the pin out is going to be fun (again), but problem solved.
Did you keep the boost bottle and pipe.  3r's does an aftermarket manifold that is supposed to be pretty good.
Cheers

Glad to hear ya still at it . I rode a cross country ,sprint with DMCC with the kids and had a ball although the YZF400 is not the perfect enduro bike for tight single lane tracks ,she preferred to try and blast through the trees rather weave between them any way we had 3 days riding in the bush on private property it was a excellent easter weekend , but now when i look in the shed i've got 7 bikes that need a good goin over and none of them are goin to CD5. I put the YZ400E up on the workstand and i'm getting it prepped .I'm trying my old shocker with a heavier spring as the Fox shock is for a F model .It works for flat track but not MX. And then the 250J has still got a big flat spot in midrange ,i swapped the reeds out and made no difference ,so i will change the carb with a spare and try that .So me and KB171 will see ya at CD5 with a trailer full of bikes.

I was gonna go back to my post but then i will just hijack this one . I have repaired the valve and links and there moving freely with the revs so i will have to do a bit more testing to make sure whats goin on with it . It's next on the bench as i just got the YZ400E finished or as far as budget will get it ready for CD5 .

Sounds good Hilly.  You are welcome to Hijack mate.  I couldn't care less.  Good to hear you are getting some riding time in.  I just turned another year older and drank some beers at Easter.  Full house of inlaws (or is that outlaws ;D)

Hey Andrew I happened to have the 125 motor in half anyway, so drilled the pin out while the motor was apart.  I'd be concerned about doing it while the motor was together as you never know where that drill swarf is going  :o :o.  I'd have to restate that pin is F*&^king hard.  That set up is another stroke of Mr Yamaha genius.  A hardened steel pin driven into a blind hole.  I wonder how he thought you were supposed to get it out.  Mine ended up turning in the hole.  Took it to Mr Yamaha - he couldn't drill it out either, so I ended up grinding it out with a diamond tip bit on the rotary tool.  Not fun.  I bought the new pin, but thought I was never going to go through that again  >:(.  So drilled it out to the next size and tapped it (6mm from memory).  To make the remainder of the shaft of the bolt round I ground the thread off the bolt and made it the same diameter as the pin.  Seems to work fine.  May wear out faster, but hey, it's easy to replace 8).  I just used an old high tensile bolt.  Doesn't look that flash, but works.  One day I will replace it with a sexy stainless allen head (one day ::)).  I'll try and take a photo on the week-end that might help.

Bonehead fitted V Force reeds, but I haven't heard how they went.
