Using the correct holding tool is the go. I've made several in the past but can't remember the details. Looks like Mainline is your 'go to' man

What are the forks off? The tools are different sizes depending on how big the forks are. If they are 43mm I will take a picture of the one I made and measure it for you. Piece of cake

Mark (mboddy) is onto it, the couple of earlier yamaha forks I've pulled apart don't have an internal hex like the later YZ's RM's etc
I made this Doobrey(tm) up, and after a little bit of touching up with a grinder it worked a treat. Sorry about the quality, the camera battery was flat, so I had to use the mobile.
Basically, it's a length of 12mm rod (i had an offcut of threaded so that's what I used) with a couple of tabs welded on the sides. I cleaned up the outside edges with a grinder to stop them scraping the inside of the fork leg. I also had to square off the inside edges of the tabs till they locked onto the doodad at the bottom of the fork leg.
Maybe if Mark is thinking they were 10mm apart you should start with 10mm rod go from there. The X forks needed 12mm + between the tabs before it'd lock on. I suppose it depends on the vintage of fork we're talking about.
