To my understanding, a bike will get washed only if it is dirty. So it needs to be clean before it leaves, then there will be no charge. If it turns up dirty, you get charged by the hour and customs guys wouldn't do things too quickly.

you can have your bike clean when it leaves the usa but when it gets here aqis-quarentine people decide yeh wash that that and that, even when clean may have a bit of vegitation somewhere or even a spiders web ei i bought in a very nice cr500 spotless and had to get it washed go figure, whoops this is a government department they need to justify their exitence   ???. apart from that it is about 120/hr to get bike washing done

Just brought in a bike from the states, it was pressure washed before shipping and from what I could see no obvious dirt or other grime when it arrive and still got steamed cleaned at a cost of $250.

I suspect quarantine just steam clean everything regardless

I've imported bikes still covered with the dirt from the last time they were ridden, one bike even had half a tank of juice, yet I still got nailed for the cleaning fee. Does the phrase 'revenue raising' ring a bell? ::)

If anyone tried to charge you $120/hr for pressure or steam cleaning you would tell them to fork right off. Australian Politicians who think we still have a democracy here in Oz must be either on drugs, delusional or both.

Gday Bitten Hey mate did you get any invoice for the cleaning from your shipper or better still from customs  ???

;D I don't want to cause any ill feeling  :-\ about the companies that import the bikes for us it is a paper crusade  ::) and they deserve to be paid a fair $$ for what they go through but are they using the washing cost as a way of earning a bit on the side  ;) i have heard a lot of different costings on the cleaning of bikes!! My experience with gov.ment dept. are they go by the book, so how can the price vary so much  :o

ok to clarify when you import a vehicle customs check your paperwork and work out what tax you need to pay and check the container to make sure it is a legit import ie vin  match bikes /vehiclemake sure it is a legal import, and there is no contraband in the contaner ie drugs, firearms etc.,they have nothing to do with the cleaning side.aqis -australian quarentine inspection services inspect the bikes/container,looking for insects, vegatation, dirt etc.aqis dosnt get paid to wash the bike/vehicle,they just direct that you will wash the vehicle.that job is done out at the port in a wash bay ,which has to be cleaned out and the residue disposed of at a certifed dump, plus the rents out at the port are huge ,mind boggling huge !aqis are just doing there job (certain that they just pick some bikes even if clean to justify their job)if you are a one off importer you are going to get charged accordingly, whereas i bring volume in i get a better rate,i even got a christmas card from customs last year ;D

in 10 years i have never paid to get a bike cleaned and i have imported a lot.all as parts
.mate who imports cars gets them cleaned in long beach before shipping so only a small amount is charged over here in sydney.
he goes to the usa and buys his own cars drives them around and cleans them as he drops them off for storage before all the paper work is done here in aus
he dose this every 2 or 3 years makes enough from the sale to pay for the next trip and car
