Goin' Old School in Canberra
« on: February 08, 2008, 07:39:20 am »
OK, so we couldn't come up with anything better than 'Old School'... at least we didn't spell it Skool!

This year the ACT club will once again be running a class just for the old bikes, this time it's the Old School class which is a loosely based Pre 88 class. The fundamental rule is that the bike must have conventional forks (ie no upside-downies) and a rear drum brake. Beyond that, disks, water cooling and single shock linkage suspension is OK. So, you could rock up with anything at all really - a 74 TM, a 78 YZ, a 79 RM, an 86 CR, even a Maico, and you'd be in.

From the sounds of things there's a bit of interest around so we might finally crack the double figures in entries. How cool would that be? Also this year, I believe the class will race with the newly formed Ladies class (hmmm... why is that do you suppose?), so it may be that in effect we have our own race without fear of being jumped on by an overly testosteroned 18 year old. Yes Please.

It's a 9 round series with the first round kicking off next Sunday 17 February.

The full calendar is as follows:

Rd 1 - 17 February

Rd 2 - 30 March

Rd 3 - 27 April

Rd 4 - 11 May

Rd 5 - 15 June

Rd 6 - 20 July

Rd 7 - 21 Sept

Rd 8 - 19 Oct

Rd 9 - 16 Nov

If you find yourself with a free Sunday on one of these dates, come on down. It's a fun day with a great track, good company, plenty of bench racing and you can even impress the crowd by entering one of the additional classes like the Over 35s. If you have an older bike you shouldn't feel too worried about being outclassed, I'll be riding my 75 RM125, and Billy Campbell sometimes rolls up on some old KTM and goes indecently fast for one of such advanced years.

Here's a pic of some Honda ridin nancy boy styling it up last year...

And here's a short video of the lads in action:

Hey Graeme,

I intend to head out on Sunday morning for a look and learn session. The TS185 needs a few more bits but I hope it should be ready for March 30. Gotta join up too!!!     :D
Have been doing road riding since my uncle sold his farm in my teens so I am expecting to be circulating at the back and going very gingerly at first. Needless to say the wife and kids are a bit nervous!!!   :-\
Am picking up a PE250 tomorrow too but it needs a lot more work so that may get a run later in the year....i hope!!!!!
Looking forward to meeting everyone!!!     ;D

Greg.

Sounds good Greg, hope to see you there. Note the MX club day is Sunday 17 February. This Sunday 10 February is a rec ride day at the Dirt Track which a few of us will go to with our old bikes.

Hopefully there'll be a rec ride day at the MX track before March 30 so you can get a taste of things and gauge your speed. Lucky we aren't going to be combined with the 250 4-strokes or whatever, cos they would be on you a bit too quickly.

Track's looking good, forecast is perfect... it's shaping up to be a brilliant start to the season. And useful practice for HEAVEN Rd 2 in April. Come on down, you'll have a ball.

Should be entertaining for me racing the 75 RM125 against all those fast Evo/Pre 85 bikes and faster wimmen. Wonder if I'll avoid coming last?

Hmmm... might be time for some digit extraction. Wonder if I can get the 125E running properly in time?

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

So how we looking Nathan? Gonna be there? You know you want to...  I've heard Jeff won't be, but I think all the rest of the regulars will be. Will I be the only one on a bike with a downpipe? That should be good for a few stares and sniggers in the pits...

I haven't made any effort to quieten the RM so I hope they don't take the sound thing too seriously. That said I do have a plan for dealing with it if it comes down to it. It'll be a bit rough and ready but I hope it'll work as a stopgap measure to keep me on the track. I'll experiment with it on Saturday.
