All of these big dollar CCMs makes Jonesys 4k '78 model look to be a pretty good buy. ;)

Those '78/'79 CCM's are cool bikes and definately on my wish list for the future as soon as i unload a few of the common bikes in the fleet.

I raced this 79 CCM for a season in pre 80 but I found it very difficult to beat good riders on YZ400's or RM400's. I got a few seconds and I told them if they let me win they wouldn't have to listen to that old 4 stroke any more. They didn't though. Anyway  my best mate bought it (really cheap) and he stripped it a few years ago but he want's to get it back together this year. GMC is replating the frame as we speak.

Stan you don't think a CCM would be up on equal ground in Evo against the big 2 strokes?
I've yet to ride one.

I believe a good rider has to work a lot harder to win on a 500 ccm compared to a 400 two stroke. I haven't ridden a 580 but maybe that would be the advantage thats needed. In saying that a well set up 79 handles very well.

When I was considering the 79 CCM, I contacted a supplier/manufacturer in the UK about availability of parts.  He indicated the 79 models had a problem with snapping the downtube under heavy compression.  He had made a replacement frame for the bikes and wanted $10,000 for one.  My head was spinning at that point.

Anyone heard of this problem before. I spoken to the original WA state distributor about it and he'd never heard of it.

HL500,
Never heard of that frame problem and I'm sure I would have struck it if it was a common problem as I was not exactly a light weight when I raced it. Close inspection before we gave it to GMC recently didn't show any problems.
