1981 CR 125 Ignition timing
« on: February 05, 2011, 02:22:27 pm »
Gents,

The workshop manual I have for the CR 125 says to Turng the Crankshaft counter clockwise from TDC a distance of `C'.

The motor is a 2040.

Trouble is the manual doesn't say what that amount is.  Can anyone help?

I have an original owners manual for a CR 125 (yellow tank) that looks about a 76 or 77 model.

That book said the Ignition Advance before TDC is 1.43mm - 17 degrees. Not sure if would be the same.

Cheers

Pete

Yes Pete it'll be the same for your bike.  My 82 spec sheet says 1.43mm for 125's  so you will be fine.

Make sure you are dead on with the timing because it could run backwards. I was sitting on the start line in Canberra some years back and when I dropped the clutch on my 83 125 the bike went backwards off the start line into the pits. Funny site to see but I didn't know what the hell had happened. When it was restarted I let the clutch out slowly and moved forward thankfully and was last in the race by then. I fixed the timing and it has never happened again in 6 years touch wood but they are close to TDC so beware.

Thanks for that race start tip. Sounds like it pays to ride the bike to the start line and keep it runnin'.

I will get a bit of help with the timing now.

Thanks

FWIW I like to check the timing using a timing light to make sure the markings on the ignition are actually accurate and ignition fires at correct time. Mark the flywheel and the cases with a white marker pen when mechanically at 1.43mm BTDC. Then check the timing with the timing light. I do it using a el cheapo light that plugs direct between spark plug lead and spark plug. I can check it by kicking it over with plug removed from engine and earthed against the head. Couldn't get an inductive pick up light to work on my Motoplat at kick over speed.  Haven't tried an induction pickup light with the engine running so they might be fine in a situation where the bike actually runs. Husky Harro
Long time no hear
I have sold the silver beast and now have a TX 510 1983 which is an Ex Tony McMahon ex Paul nelson bike I think. Much easier to ride and better for the riding we do up here which is mainly natural terrain.
And yes you can have a ride but its your shout after, JD of course. Your drinking partner should be coming along also aka Brendan my son so it should be a good weekend. Have you sold all your bikes.
