Australian 500 short circuit winning bike
Great find Stan, but didn't Gary win the Short Circuit title on a Hagon JAP?

Mark, I think it was later than 73 before Gary got a slider and I think it was either a Hagon or Godden jap.
I remember he did do a lot of dirt track on the Monty's in the early days but I can't swear to the 73 500 Aussie Title claim, thats what the owner of it tells me that Lyall verified.

Regards Stan.

I recall having a conversation with Gary at one of the last Condo meetings where he reckoned the Hagon JAP he rode at that meeting was ''very similar'' to the bike he won the title on. He was damn fast on those sliders, even in the vintage era.

Well thats good stan, you have found the Montesa VR 360 and your buying it, as it would have been a waste to see it rot in a shed, if you don`t buy it for any reason l would hope that you consider giving me a chance to buy it., l am happy that you found the bike as l have a dvd with gary racing it at barrabool in 1973 and the bike is a rocket ship. cheers. Ok, this is the latest about the 360. The statement of being in very good unrestored condition was stretching the truth a bit. It had been modified for enduro's back in the late seventies/early eighties including grab handles welded on the rear frame loop, enduro gaurds etc. The frame has been painted red ??? Ugly fork caps fitted. But the good news is that the motor was completely gone through by Lyall O'brien not long before he died ( R.I.P) and it hasn't been used since.
I'm dissapointed at the mods but will just take a bit more work to put back to it's former glory. I have paid a deposit and will be picking it up in the Sydney area in a couple of weeks.
I spoke to Gary O'brien a few days ago and he said the later Tank, seat and shoulderless rims were added in 74 when the new model VR's came out. He was happy that I had found it and keen to see it put back to what it was in 73.

Stan, what a find :o. That big lump of engine looks pretty damn macho in there! Considering the age and life the old Monty's had it's survived pretty well when comapred with many other relics I've seen.

If you aren't going to use those air caps, I'm willing to buy 'em off you. I've been looking for a set to suit Betors for a while ;).

Their yours Mark.
By the way had you ever seen or heard about this bike around the Sydney area? Seems strange someone hasn't found it before this.

Thanks mate....Nah, if I'd known about it living here I certainly would have put my detective hat on and traced it down. It's a serious bit of history and it's going to a good home. What part of Sydney did it live?

Near Castle Hill I beleive.

This is it when O'briens still owned it (thanks JC for the photo)

And when this guy bought it off Ryan's. He said the number 18 was on it when he got it.

What a great find!  Would like to have a peek inside that cylinder and see how
Lyall got the power out of that beast!  Pretty basic porting and that motor weighs
over 70lbs.

My American mate Mike, who's currently doing a 20 point resto of a '69 360GP has asked how hard was it to do the right shift conversion?  There's another thing to check out when you pull her down Stan ;D.

So the bike lived in Castle Hill area? That's only 20k from me but it may have been 20000 miles if I didn't know it was there >:(. It makes me wonder what other historic gems are sitting forgotten under rotting sheets in sheds throughout Australia?

My brother DENNIS RACED A 69 MONTESA 360, at the time is was bore out to 380 cc, and the person who raced it before my brother bought it was Malcome Palmer from Geelong.
