I tend to agree with you there George a KX500 is never going to pull $9K no matter what is done to it. About $5K or $6K would be on the money. I've been down this road before and had a few arguments with people that seem to think you can't build this type of bike on a BUDGET. Six months ago 2 X 83KX 500's went through Ebay that were 99% restored and needed finishing touches for the $3K-4K mark.
Sure if you are going to buy all Nos stuff hell it will cost you $$$$$. But to prove a point I was at Goulburn Swap Meet last week and I picked up basically a complete motor disassembled because of damaged gears, complete with pipe, kickstarter lever for $90. So the parts are out there and you can build one.

Thats right Brooksie you don't see too many vmx bikes fetch more then 5k unless it's a real low hour
     or a yz250a etc. I brought a 84 kx500 84 from ebay last year for $2800, an unfinished restro i've
spent a further $1500 and i've got a good honest race bike that looks sweet. Teddy has a yz465
for sale also seems he's a restorer that doesn't ride just in it to make a dollar and if thats his go
good on him but he's still not going to get 9k for a bike he's built for 5k. He must count his labour
     into his cost @$100 a hour  :D

I suppose this is the downside of advertising somthing for sale on an open forum , people feel its their right to publicly express their opinions about the bike and the asking price.

Is the bike worth 9k only potential purchasers will know that when they decide to buy or not to buy.

I do beleive its bad form to critisize the bike and asking price on a forum , but then its also bad form to bar up when people hijack your for sale thread (its not like its a paid ad )

What the bike owes Ted is his buisness as is the asking price , We tend to comment generally on here about bike for sale on Ebay etc , difference being most of those bikes are sold anonomously where as on here sellers are forum members and contributors.

At the end of the day whats it matter , you can ask what you want for your bike sombody wants it enough they will pay , i remember when you could pick up YZ As and Bs for sweet FA now look at them , still the same bikes there just 20 yrs older  ;)

What Bill said.

And FWIW, Ted does ride.
The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

George i have never met you let alone had a conversation with you. I didn`t build this bike. However i own it now. As i said to Firko i wanted to sell a 500 to buy a trailer and a 250. So i guess i`ll be seeing you at HEAVEN`S first round at Buladelah on the 19 / 20 th March then

Restorer .... Hardly. If i was in it for the money George i would have been liquadated long ago.

TM BILL.....Criticize a bike price by all means,,,just don`t do it where the guy has placed his add...paid for or not.

I think maybe GEORGE is confused as that bike was for sale near our camp at CD8  ::).  I spoke to the guy myself and the sign on it said 8000.  I told that bloke if I had 8 grand on me I would have bought it on the spot - it is even better looking in real life.  It's all relative - you pay what you think it is worth .  What you are willing to pay is also possibly connected to how much money you have to play with - to some people 8 grand is peanuts ;).
Looking for YZ250C parts NOS if possible

"My inability to use emoticins in the right context is really getting me down :)
The only triple jumps he would have been doing are the hop, skip & jump.

Yes it is a nice sled. I remember seeing it before it was restored and it was not so pretty. All of Watto's bikes are sweet things when he finishes them.  Pity its an 83  ;D

I agree with Bill I don't think it is fantastic form to preach on about what a bike is worth under the for sale ad, free or not. Especially if you have just cocked up your facts and got the wrong bike.  I would apologise if it was me.

As for VMX bikes being worth about 5 grand, I can think of a number of bikes that regularly fetch quite a bit more. Bikes that are mint, rare, highly desirable, tricked out, RHs, MC490s, Mugens, CCMs etc will always bring out someone with the cash.

If you really wanted to make money off VMX bikes I would say the best way is to snap up 'future classics' , maybe the KX500 is one of them.  ;)
