Nickel plating yah or nay ?
« on: January 23, 2008, 09:57:23 pm »
I was looking at one of my champoin frames the other day is still looks good.......except in a few spots it showing through and has a spot lifting near on the headset gusset.

I was thinking MAybe down the track if i was thinking of redoing the frame when i park it, some of me say's just grey powder coat it, the other half says get onto the nickel ?

I like the slimness and colour of the nickel, but it needs to be done right and if not it looks shit and lifts, i guess its like chroming its a colour not a filller, but on the other coin a frame in Powder coat cvoats $200 in Nickel $700, is there a finish in the middle somewhere ?

its a 1970 early stamp frame so id like to do it justice , but then again like a house you dont want to be the best in the street cause it will end up owing you far more than its really worth.   Thoughts  :-\

what about 2pac paint? i believe as do many others that powder coating is cheap and nasty. Or even paint it with pressure pack cans your self, even that will be better than most powder coat jobs if you take the time.

nickle is big bucks but you must make sure you get it done by a good place. i recommend and only use Gold Star Metal finishers at Hackam for nickle/chrome. you get what you pay for in electroplating.

freaky - My Tm has been painted in black ENAMEL . The stuff is as hard as won't chip , but full of scrathes from time gone by . So I asked myself the same question as you have asked what should I repaint the frame with .....powder coat been there chips too easy - 2 pack tried that also ( if you get the base coat wrong it chips easily )  POR 15 tuff as   ( sand blasters hate the stuff -too hard to remove )
NICKELS  affordable not that exspensive                        Enamel ?????

spot on there oldfart. if you get the undercoats/priming process wrong it can chip, but if done properly it shouldnt. most coatings will chip if you go at it with a hard object thought. re-finishing a frame doesnt last for ever!!! if you really want a good finish to stay looking good you just have to repaint the frame every few seasons.
