Motoplat Ignition Repairers
« on: January 21, 2008, 11:12:58 pm »
I have a motoplat mini 6 off a Husky 430 that refuses to spark.  It worked before the restoration but it wont now.  I have done all the usual checks for earth etc and have tested the stator and coil resistances with results that dont look too good compared with what I could find on the internet for a healthy motoplat mini 6.

Can anyone recommend a good repairer in Australia for motoplats.  Would a repair be cost effective vs buying an evilbay special (who knows if it would work either?) or should I be biting the bullet and getting a PVL or MZB.

Cheers  Steve

Thanks.  I phoned Betta Bikes and they say they can repair the motoplats for about $200 with 1 week turnaround currently.  IF it works its a lot cheaper than a $600 PVL ignition.  IF it dont then I just blew $200!

Has anyone used Betta and can you recommend them.

There is a guy Vance Smith (http://motoplatrepair.tripod.com/id1.html) in the US who repairs motoplats and gives a 3 year warranty.  He charges US$100 - $150 and turns them around in a week.

Steve Hardaker of Bradford Ignitions in the UK http://www.uk-motoplat.com/home.html also offer a service.  Not sure what he charges.

All ready to go but no spark.....damn

Cheers

yes they are fine, excellent service.of course if it doesnt work then let them know and they should sort it out again. dont stew on it and then winge to others they are no good with out returning the part to them and explaining that it doesnt work. i just know that is what some people do with business' and they dont give them a chance to resolve the problem. Betta Bikes have an excellent reputation and rewind the stators for 90% of the riders in the offroad night racing scene over here.

$200 au sounds reasonable to me. US 150 plus post both ways and exchange rate will work out more than $200 and a bit for post over here. and you know what people in the US are like with shipping charges.

Betta Bikes also made me a complete new stator with all new parts inc (except for my ignition coils which were fine) 2 new custom made light coils, custom machined stator plate, wires, hardware etc all tested and ready to go. this also included testing and invsetigation/experimental work to build what i wanted to my needs. all for a little over $500. all done via mail order no problems.

Thanks thats al I need to hear.  Nothing like a recommendation to give confidence in an interstate business.  Will ship off to Betta today and hopefully I can be riding in a week or two before the VMX season starts in Brisvegas.

Betta repaired my mini 6 but the bike still wont start.  Have just discovered by using a $20 Supercheap Autos neon timing light that its firing 90 degrees too late.  Mechanically the motoplat is set up correctly with holes in flywheel and stator perfectly aligned at 17 degrees BTDC (for a 430 Husky).  The rewound ignition fires at 73 degrees ATDC!

Could they have swapped the blue and black wires by mistake when they replaced the wires from the back of the stator?  Would this give a 90 degree timing error?
