RM80B/C/N
« on: November 27, 2010, 12:54:50 pm »
Dont kow why i'm starting this when i have so many other projects on the go already, but anyhoo.. About to embark on the resto of my RM80B, and i am interested in any bikes/parts/goodies for any of the above models, if any one has bits they would like to part with. Would love nos front guard and sidecovers, but i believe they are akin to chooks teeth....

Correct. Plastics are the tricky bit.
I waited a year for the NOS front guard and side covers on mine.
I missed out on the only rear guard in years...
But probably the rarest item is the front number plate for a B.
They come up rather less often.

Tank stickers can still be had from Suzuki.
The mechanicals are all readily available.
IRC tyres and tubes are available.
Seat base will probably need some repairs.

Thanks Luke, the B i have is actually very original, and has the original front plate, bars, levers and front tyre even. i lucked out and got a new rear guard from Suzuki a few years ago, found a set of nos sidecovers on evilbay recently, but they went for serious drug money. Forum member BigK is very handy with the spray gun, and if all else fails i will get him to paint the originals and repair and paint the front guard. Have you any pics of yours to post up ?

these were all taken in very poor light last week. I was going to take new better shots and naturally is is drizzling right now..

The RM80 seat logo was painted on after the seat was recovered. Do NOT attempt this. It looks OK from a few metres away though.

Luke while I haven't stenciled the RM80 I have done quite a few of the smaller 'Suzuki' across the back ala TM125 and TS etc. The one I used I purchased from ebay .au for about $8 I think , I used it about 3 times before it started to lose it's sharp edges. pretty sure they custom make them but the film is super thin and super sticky. It doesn't leave any adhesive on the seat if removed straight after spraying either ;)

311..DS80's from '78 to 2000 are a good source of engine parts (same trans) and infact a DS80 engine in it's entirety less exhaust will bolt right in. Forks are a little tricky to find as they were conventional non leading axle type but if you have lowers then it does give a few options such as TM75, early YZ80 or similar. A C model seat will probably be easier to find as they had the plastic base. Plastics are common to both B and C excepting the illusive front plates. Near everything else is listed on fleabay from time to time and most items can be had new ;)

I made my own and well..  it almost came off :-)  If I had to do it again, I would definately be getting templates cut by computer rather than hand. It was rather more difficult to do an R than all the solid letters! Of course, if I had done it on a flat piece of leather it would, even so, have come out near perfect. All part of the fun.

As to the various parts - I step back and listen to The Master of all things 80cc - Chris.

Which reminds me - will box some items for you some time this week, Chris.
cheers!
Luke

jeez the old DG head has seen better days Mario..think you'd have to be pretty keen to grab that particular item for that particular price :D

Luke, many thanks! I'm really looking forward to doing another 80..soon as I can get down to collect mine from Mick's it goes straight to the front of the que. Mind you I may slip something else in between now and then ;)

Some people just have to have that DG head Chris.
Nothing a hammer,screwdriver,vise grips,file,tig welding,milling,re-anodising won't fix! ;D ;D ;D
We've seen your work Doc,you can perform miracles.

I've been thinking about doing the YZ80H or K (shit did i say that aloud) those white bikes... for a few months or putting the PE175D ie rolling chassis together (big bucks)and possibly another frame.
Just about given up on finding a PE175X (where the freakin' hell are they all?)
There was a really nice one on Ebay a couple of weeks ago that the owner must have got a good offer only 2 days into the auction, and when i saw the bidding ended early,my jaw dropped :'(

Oh well,I'll still keep an eye out for one,but i have the RM175 and the RM125T to play with and keep me busy.

I see someone has bid on it already Mario. I'm afraid DG stuff does nothing for me but it sure rings bells with many others. Will keep an eye open up here for '81/'84ish YZ80's. I have a YZ80K/XR80 too but that's no problemo as 'all' mini's are cool ;D Would love a '79 KX80A1 and '79 CR80R   8)

Yeah same here with the DG stuff,if you can find them cheap then so be it.
My YZ80H is missing ALOT of stuff and would take a bit of hunting to find bits.
The 80K is mostly there as i put the motor in my sprint kart, but i cut the shift lever and pipe to fit the kart, but it wouldn't take much to get back together.
A mate at work bought a YZ80K brand new in the crate when they came out....he still has it and will never sell it.

Cheers 311..BigK also has a selection of RM80 bits too I believe. If you get a chance sometime, do up a list of the parts needed and post it here or email me or Luke. I don't have much in the way of the hard to get bits but maybe able to help with gaskets, rings and other smaller items. I may have a spare 80N tank and seat but I'd need to double check. Looking for an 80b/c tank myself. I'm scouring ebay all the time so will let you know if I find any NOS plastics. I don't bother bidding on them anymore as the prices paid are way up there with the best of them. About $250us+shipping the last rear guard went for and that was before our dollar went up..the front plate is anyones guess ;) front guards pop up a little more often at around $50-$100 but the side covers are rare as too. I paid $499 my 80B brand spanking new (with a free MXL kidney belt and yellow Stage3 gloves) back in '77 but these days the same figure doesn't even buy the plastics. Mind you the rest is pretty much dirt cheap to rebuild so it's not all bad ;)
