i was there that day he sent his mechanic out just before the start of the moto to flatten the upside of the jump just after the honda hole. I do belive he jumped into the lead but can/t remember how he finished i think thorpe won gebours 2nd

I was there too!  But I was 6 and nowhere near the bombhole.  I think I was half way up the hill somewhere.  Still remember the crowd going nuts over Thorpey though

Me too! the whops out the back were so deep you could stand in between the peaks and they were head hight!
We are not here for a long time, we are here for a good time!

.
As far as Aussie tracks go; who remembers Jilliby, near Wyong?

That is/was my favourite track ever!

I hear its an apple orchard now. Shame.

Probably my second favourite was the old Amaroo Park track. It had a main straight with a surface as hard as a tarred road, it had been soaked in that much sump oil and run over so much!

Here is a shot of Broome, Tioga in the USA. I think that a round of the US outdoor nationals used to be run here . A member of this forum , that lived close to this track , posted this image some time ago . I like the look of this track, as well , but I seem to have a thing about hills and greenery.

As far as my favourite track in Australia is concerned , it used to Rickard's farm at Mirriwinni N.Q ( just north of Innisfail). Sadly, it is no longer in use after it scored a direct hit from Cyclone Larry and I think that the jungle has now reclaimed it. Lots of big trees were blown over and across the track, taking the underground irrigation system out with the tree roots . So my favourite Australian track would now be either Toowoomba's Echo Valley, Malanda NQ, Gum Valley at Mackay, or Conondale  . Some of the southern Queensland guys that used to race in the '70s talk about a track near the Maleny township ( before Conondale) that was very good .

I rode at Maleny in 1979; a great track.

My favourite track in SA was Snake Gully, which closed around 1977/78 I think.  The outline of the track can still be see if you are prepared to jump a fence and trespass.

The common theme seems to be significant changes in elevation around the track; hard to find that these days.

Jilliby would have to be the best soil of any track i've ridden.
it was always beautifull naturall loam.

As well as exciting geography of tracks, I think a thrilling part of good tracks are the turning points and trackside fencing or markers.
I reckon it feels good when you turn by a haybale or bunting.   It also looks good in photos, when reading photo reports of famous tracks.
the 1970s Trans-Am tracks come to mind ... laced as they were with miles of picket fencing.
How about star picket berms  :o? Good crowd control as well  :D.

A few early shots of Jilliby I found surfing the web:

(These shots are copyright Harry and Jim Budd of Budd Motorsport btw. I'm sure they wouldn't mind them appearing here! )
