hello again,I am writing to ask,"do I need to pull the engine apart to replace the kick start shaft on my 172 cota.paul.
what ! Who me ? Nah

No you can access the kick start shaft and gear train by removing the clutch cover. The starter system is a weakness on this engine family Cota 123 - 200 - 242, cappra 125, H6 & 7 Enduro 125. There are a number of versions of the gears, shafts, bearings etc and they do not all mix and match. You may need the correct gears for the shaft as gear sizes, shaft design, bearings size and type varied as they tried to resolve the problem.

There is also a metal bracket which holds one of the gears in position on its shaft and obsorbs some thrust from the gear. This bracket can bend or wear on some versions and allows the gear to only half mesh leading to a stripped gear. The gears are made of a rare alloy called unobtainium :'(
