I recently had to fix up a 'motorised' bicycle for someone and i can tell you they are quite dangerous and illegal. This one was one of the kits you buy out of just bikes magazine and bolt it into the frame of a old style MTB. This particular one was 80cc 2stroke. Engine mounts are primative and minimal, lots of vibration. The rear sprocket attaches to the rear wheel spokes! yes the those thin spokes! It attaches via a rubber mounting block squashed between a steel plate so basically the power is transfered through the spokes to the hub. This particular one needed a complete rear wheel re-lace as it had basically collapsed but admittedly this was due to previous ower abuse (donuts/burnouts or whatever).

This one also had a very poor throttle and throttle cable set up. Wong amount of free play and easy got stuck on full throttle.

This thing really gets up and go for a little aircooled 80cc. Ther engine is too powerfull for the brakes that just rub on the edge of the rim, its quite scary when you try to brake.

But thing i just dont get is that A) im sure these 80cc engines are illegal and 35 or 50cc is the limit? B) guys loose their car license and then get one of these things but i can not understand how they can be allowed to ride one of these on the road with no license You loose your license for drink driving but then can still get around on one of these, it just doesnt make sense. I believe you can ride up to a 50cc motorcycle/scooter (vespa type thing) with just a car license and you are required to wear a proper AS motorcycle helmet. I just dont get how you can get away with riding a bicycle with no bike or car license with an 80cc or 50cc petrol engine and just a bicycle helmet . Im sure its not legal. Im not sure but i think the limit for petrol engines in bicycles is 35cc? i would think that if its 50cc then it would be like a normal 50cc scooter and you at least need a car liscense.

Ok if you wanna hoon around the backyard on on, but i dont think you should be allowed to hoon around the streets on one without a car license at least and a motorcycle helmet, expecially if its a 50cc or more.

I maybe wrong and should probably do some research before I open my trap but I 'thought' up here in QLD the law was a power rating deal..something like no more than 1kw or 1000watts obviously before reg is required. Be a pain looking under all the battery jobs to check the motors but I feel for sure near any of the petrol jobs would have an output of at least double the 1kw limit with this figure 35cc sound realistic.

I have fixed a few of those chinese ones lately and am dismayed at some of the engineering.
You need to drop your standards a long way to work on one.
I have also worked on a Sachs one and it was a pleasure. Guy at work bought a Sachs three wheeler recently and it,s very nice.

I was told that the hp limit in QLD is .25 of a KW.
A standard 160cc victa is about 3Hp.
I have been told that some of the tiny methanol  motors are getting up to 1Hp per cc.

Agreed Hoony who buys a push bike with a motor on it I thought a push bike you are spose to peddle yourself.

Pu8t a JR50 pipe on one of the Z Box engines and you'll have trouble staying under the speed limit

When I was living in the States someone abandoned a Puch moped similar to that shown below in the car park of my apartment building. After it sitting there for months it became obvious that nobody was going to claim it so it soon became mine. After the usual fuel change, a new battery and air in the tyres I got the little bugger going and used it every night to go the 5 mile journey to and from work or footy training. It had a 50cc motor and didn't need rego or a bike licence to ride it, or a helmet for that matter. The rules there insisted on auxiliary pedal power and a 50cc limit. When I moved I left it there and it became a community bike for the residents. 5 years later it was still there doing its job for whoever needed it. What a great little bike, I'd love another one.

TRY BUYING PARTS FOR THEM WE HAD A SACHS HERE FOR 7MTHS WAITING ON PARTS FROM THE IMPORTER. we have stopped fixing the chinese bikes unless the owner supplies parts
