How to properly polish alloy

while we're back onto questions,
what do you guys use to clean up the part between processes?
a mate uses kero and swears by it but another opinion is always welcome
and,
what about "Silvo" as a final polish on aliminium?

I use tupentine, or rubbing alchohol as it is cheap here in US. The 3 m wheels are called "Convolute Wheels"-they are quite expensive. That said, I am going to order some in a few weeks,as the time saved will be $ in my pocket( and a Maico rider needs a few $ ).

to remove the bulk of the polish left behind i use a degreaser then hose off and use paint thinners then and de-wax on a white cloth and keep wiping with that until no black polish shows up on the white cloth. only then is it clean enough for clear coat if the part is going to be clear coated.

Vandy, Silvo or Brasso works a treat..I swear by the stuff

thanks Doc, it took me a while to catch up with this topic.
i've just cleaned up the cases and fork legs on my old RT1 for no other reason than the motor just seemed to lend itself to the idea of polishing and i've never done it before, so now seemed like as good a time as any to try it.
i just used my 6" pedestal grinder fitted with different polishing wheels from bunnings. i'm still yet to do the silvo but should get onto it soon.
