What do people reckon is the best way to clean the sludge out of two stroke exhausts please?

Thats easy, i burn the oil/carbon out with the oxy/acetylene torch. Make sure you do it outside and away from dry grass. Once i get the insides on fire i then use compressed air trigger gun to blow the fire along till it get to the other end. Yes it makes tonnes of smoke The end result is a spottlessly clean inner of pipe and heaps lighter too! make sure you wear safety glasses as sometimes some sparks can shoot back out at you and also do it with a few meters clearance around the end of the pipe because you can get explosions out the other end of the pipe. Its quite easy and fun to do actually I also wear thick welding gloves and have some sort of stick or rod handy so i can move the pipe around a bit. Every so often stop blowing the air in it and turn the pipe over to make sure you dont burn a hole through it because the metal can glow red hot if your not careful.

I did as described on my gt80 pipe so much came out no wonder it wasn't running properly when I last rode it.

I dont have an oxy, I need some kind of caustic soda or acid.

Well ive tried Caustic acid, basically does stuff all though and anything it does remove takes days/weeks. Its too slow and doesnt really work that well. Thats why burning it is a lot better.

what about a hand held burnzamatic propane or Mapp Gas torch.

We use a 55 gallon drum.
  Build a small fire inside with scrap lumber . Suspend the pipe with a 5/8 inch or so rod and some wire.
Let it cook off the carbon on one end then flip the pipe and let it cook the other end. Dont build the fire up too big or you can warp the pipe.
 Let it cool off and light taps with your hand to the side of the pipe or an old drive chain rattled around inside will get the last bits out.
Its worked well for us since the 60's on pipes that were painted.
Its a lazy mans way to do the job chuckle chuckle. ( you can sit in a chair and have a brew while its cooking )

Best way is to tune the engine then there will be no 'spooge' to burn off............ever.

I drop chambers off to my local car engine rebuilder and get them to put it in their caustic hot tank that they use for cleaning engine blocks.
The pipe comes back looking like new inside and out, usually costs somewhere between free and $10, no breathing in toxic fumes or cleaning up black gunk

Make a fire and put it in that.

It keep us warm as well
The next day it looked like new.
