Still Amazed.....
« on: July 16, 2010, 10:54:32 am »
......at how many Monties pop up on EvilPay :D - and how many Survivor Monties there are out there. It must be one of the highest Survivor to production ratios of all marques 8).

Here's another two Gems  ;) .

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Montesa-/220635755602?cmd=ViewItem&pt=AU_Motorcycles&hash=item335eea7452

How rare are these two 8). There wouldn't have been too many VA's let alone 360's. And the H6 125  would be as 'rare as' in any part of the world wouldn't it?

The VA looks like a MX'er but set up for Enduro's (Complete with home made pillion pegs  :o ??? ::)). Is this a Known enduro bike from the period? It looks pretty distinctive.

I don't think the seller as done himself any favours with the pixies or the descriptions - hardly maximizing the selling potential :P.

Is the seller anyone here, any one we know? Looks like a Monty collector of some standing (and now retiring from the ranks? :'()

I'm buggered if I know how you pick a VA from a V-75. Maybe they came with different shocks or something ???. Either way they're really good bikes but unfortunitly fall into the pre 78 era and are overlooked by all but the collector :-\. I should never have sold mine as it would have been a cool partner to my VR.

I should buy it however I'd be breaking my rule of no more than one resto on the go and my limit of how many bikes I have (but if I didn't count the 2000 YZ well then.....)

* And I think he wants a little too much for it in that condition.. ::)

I agree. It's the condition that is not really described.

On Rarity I would think they are worth the money but his description is not exactly inspiring. I would want to view the bikes first (not that I'm in the market  ::) - which is a pity because I think  these are interesting bikes - I'm particularly attracted to the H6 for it's rarity and appearance 8).

The seller is Ian Frost, he has sold a few Montesas over the last 6-12 months. They have all had the same lack of details and sketchy photos, but his phone number is on the description so its not really a problem. That H6 is something I would consider too but the start price is a bit out there. I reckon he would have been better served by starting the bidding about half that amount and let it run its course. 8)

ross, its the rear shock mount, that is the differents between the vr and v75. the montesa with the number 9 is a VR 250, UNLESS THE REAR SHOCK MOUNT HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH. to my knowlage the bike number 9 is a VR 250 with the right black guards.

Ross is talking about the difference between a VA and a V75, I'm not sure either. ???

The differents between a  V75 AND THE VA, IS THE FRAME, the rear shock mount is the same, the bottom shock mount is move up the wingarm, they had long shocks than the v75, and front fork where longer. about an 1 inch.

The VA used an inch longer swingarm with a longer shock.  The shock mounts stayed in
the same location as the V75.  The frame is the same for both models.
The VA swingarm (7340.117030) also can be identified by a gusset running from the rear
of the shock mount to the rear of the swingarm.  The Va also used a different Betor fork assembly
with different triple trees than the V75.

I think you're right. The angle of the dangle means a dramatically decreasing rate suspension IIRC. I don't think the VA nor the VB are much better from this prospective. I think the rider would end up with good travel but doubtful dampening qualities. I've read a few Road Tests of the period been critical of Monty's rear suspension but it seems the rest of the chassis was excellent and disguised any ill effects.

The period was a period of change in all regards but particularly with the rear suspension. But rear suspension seems to have been a 'blind side' to the Monty engineers. Even with early frames the engineers angled the shocks in which would have made for a slim frame and seat but would have put side forces on the shock shaft causing stiction issue I would have thought.

The v75 and VA suspension was a stop gap proposition to be sure.  As you alluded too, I think
the Montesa engineers were "blind sided" as compared to Husky, Maico, KTM etc.  It was very
hard to setup the bikes with the laydown suspension, as when let off the power, the rear tended
to pogo and the spring rate was critical for decent behavior.  The lack of a decent tensioner or
guide and just plain terrible stock shocks didn't help matters.   We also had some problems
with the tubing that the top mounts were attached to, bending.  It was not a fun couple of seasons!
All was forgiven in 77' with the intro of the VB.  Now days, V75's and VA's make good donor bikes
to make VR's.  The VA 250 did make the most power of the VR, V75 motors, as the porting was revised
and they removed the exhaust  bridge, and made the exhaust a big oval.

These engineers should leave thing along that work well, the vr engine was all most spot on, fast, light, but the screw in nut on the manifold need to be redesigned.

The market has spoken ;). Both gems were passed in, no bids. But was it price or description?
