'69 Cappra GP 360

Here's some progress shots of my mate in Fresno, California's resto of his 360 'Clockwork Orange' Monty. Whe I last saw this bike in 1996 it had been out in the elements for 20 years and was actually ingrown into a hedge. Eventually Mike felt sorry for the old girl and dug her out and put her in the shed and recently decided to bring the bike back to life. It's looking pretty good so far.

Same front hub as the Scorpion and King Scorpion of similar vintage. They must have stopped pretty well with a twin leading shoe 7" brake.
I wish one would stop at my place. :)

Beautifull bike firko, my brother race that same model bike, when l was 14 l asked my mother to take me and my bike to the track which was call Kettle Park, little did my mother know that the bike l was taking to the track was my brothers 69 model 360 Montesa for a spin, mother dropped me off it took me half the day to get the bike started, when finally l did get it started l was exhausted, so l gingerly rode around for a couple of laps, the power was so exciting, l went round one corner at the bottom of the track and opened it up the front wheel came up and up, and up, and l was game to let go, so l hit the ground with my face and chest, my legs came back like a banana. and l layed their for a while, thinking that my back or neck was broken, so layed and waited, got up dusted myself down, back was saw, picked up the bike and pushed it up the hill until my mother came. My mother came she helped me to load the bike up and we went home and l said nothing to her.

Yeah Monte they stop pretty well but I still wouldn't run one. These hubs have a notoriously bad habit of cracking between the spoke holes and eventually collapsing the wheel. Billy Brown had it happen a couple of times on his '69 250 GP so he went to the smaller single leader later Cappra hub and hasn't had another problem in 20 years of racing the bike. I just noticed that Mikes bike above has Ceriani forks replacing the original Betors.

mike is restoring it as a show peice, the foot peg would need to be replaced if he is going to race it. mikes 360 is a 68 model, their where two different frames, the one we had, had the white frame and the rear loop was part of the frame, mike has got the exstension chrome loop. montesa continue with that idea after the la cross and 67 montesa.

i used to race a 250 in the early 70 s at nepean with the same foot pegs and white frame,i think it had a green tank.methenol was a problem though tank used to weep fuel.

I think the relationship between street Monties and their off road cousins was quite strong to start with. I doubt if a TLS 7 inch brake with air scoop would have been the ideal choice - probably the effect of cost constraints etc and the unsophisticated market of the time.

Still I'm surprised that the spokes broke away. Looking at Firko detailed shots they look substantial enough. But if I was gonna race one I would probably swap for weight considerations as much as anything else.

The spoke ends were pulling thru the holes.  The addition of a washer (part number 0093.104)
on the spoke end took care of the problem.

Another cool bike......with modern technology you'd think they would overcome any wheel problems?....mind you, looking at some peoples bikes and the tension/bend in some spokes that have been relaced it's a bit scarey.
