Hey Geoff, I've been looking for the makeup of Reynolds steel. I want to see how close or far away it is to Chro-Mo. I TIG welded a mild steel bracket to my Cheney swingarm on the weekend and Chrome Moly and SS rods sucked. I ended up getting a good result with common old copper coated mild steel rods. I hope it holds as it's a brake stay!

No time for Qld, been wasting too much time reading all the shit on this site :D :D

Reynolds 531
Carbon: .23-0.29%
Sulfur: 0.045% max
Silicon: 0.15-0.35%
Phosphorous: 0.045% max
Manganese: 1.25-1.45%
Molybdenum: 0.15-0.25%

Tensile strength 120,000 Psi    I can't be bothered converting this to Mpa, got real work too do (like taking Qlders money ;D)
Interesting, I would have thought it would have welded with the stainless OK

Normaly that's true but it doesn't count when working with Pommy stuff ;D ;D

For many years the only recommended way to assemble a frame was by fillet brazing or brazing with lugs, and this was the way 531 frames were constructed. When Reynolds introduced 753, due to the nature of the material, these tubes needed to be low temperature silver soldered.

We now have a new generation of materials in 525, 725, 631, 853 and 953 steels. All of these can be brazed, but the most popular method of assembly is by TIG welding. (on 853 we do recommend that gear fittings etc are silver soldered onto the tubes).

There are many filler wires that can be used on 525/725/631/853 like ER-70S-6.

I forgot to mention that it's an old Cheney frame, made from 531 Reynolds. I've been told Simon makes them out of 4130 these days but I may be wrong.

I would have brazed the bracket but I was trying to save as much nickel plating as possible so figured TIG would produce more localised heat and not damage or discolour the plating. It surprised me about the rods though. I was getting blowback with both Chrome-Moly and Staino rods but good old copper coated oxy rods flowed like toothpaste out of a tube. I was a tad worried that cracks may appear so I gave it some healthy boilermaker standard whacks with a hammer both when it was hot and once cooled and no problems appeared whatsoever.

Actually you can braze with a MIG too
Silicon Bronze & Phosphor Bronze wires are available, I used some years ago for welding Bronze angle iron
