Toy #26.
« on: August 01, 2007, 07:31:10 pm »
Dragged this home today... No ignition coil, but heaps of compression and nearly new chain and sprockets.
It came with a seat that I dropped off to have recovered before I even got home... non-rusty base!

I'm not sure exactly which way to go with it - it's too original to deserve a full-on resto (plus I wanted one of these because a couple of mates had SL100/125 paddock bikes when I was a kid, and it never occoured to me that they could be pretty), but it's also too rough and incomplete to leave alone without having it irritate me.
I recall seeing an old pic of one built into "race spec"  (in VMX?) and I think that's what I'm going to do - turn it into a cheap and cheerful 1971 style racer. Yeah, it'll be just as lousy as a race bike in 2008 as it was in 1971, but that's kinda the point.

So... it will get a big clean-up, possibly respray the frame (but definitely not the guards or tank), some tyres, some number plates and go riding. :)

I may not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

is this the first incursion into the wonderful world of honda for you nathan?  i seem to remember something from the old forum which may mean this latest one is more showing a growing leaning toward red (metaphor only - honda didn't see the light colour wise till late seventies) and away from blue - good move.

my best mate had an sl125 when i was a kid and he dinked me round the tracks on it for years - we had a ball!  looks servicable too.  what year is it?  after the silver tanked model?

It was one of these little bikes that started my love for bike riding. My brother and I just rode it( ::)didn't know you had to service it ::)) and it just kept going. The sl350 they think you should buy. Had one of them set up for flat track. It didn't go real well but sounded great :D Darcy
I might not be winning,But I'll be grinning

Had one of those when I was in 5th form at high school. Used to ride to school every day and then fang around the local tracks on the weekends revving the absolute crap out of it trying to keep up with rich mates (those that left school and had jobs) on XL 175's and DT 250's. That thing was bullet proof except for that battery ignition which let me down on numerous occasions. I seemed to forever pulling into servos to get a quick charge on an ailing battery just so I could get home. Rode around a lot at night without lights on just to preserve battery power. Installed a 150 kit and it became a rocket. Could easily pull wheelies in third gear. Loved that bike. Lots of fond memories.................

Good score Nathan it will sleep next to the next generation XL175 you will have to cover them so the Yamaha's don't get jealous. More gaskets coming your way in the post mate.

Definitely seem to be one of those bikes that people have a soft-spot for, based on the replies so far...  :)

Spoke to Tim the SL guru last night, and he's stirred up thoughts of 150 kits and methanol, and... Hmmm... maybe we'll just get it running first!
Although, does anyone have a SL125 motor they're willing to part with?

Gezza, As kids we all had four stroke Hondas (back when 4-stroke meant quiet and relaible - how things change...), so there's been a long list of old Hondas in my past... Though, I only owned two of them myself before I discovered the better Japanese brand.  ;D
The SL100 is sitting next to my two XL175s (one racer-to-be and one resto-to-be) and now an 87 CR125RH, so it won't feel too lonely...
As to the exact age... I dunno...  ??? Someone help?

Interesting links Noel.
So it looks like a Candy Sapphire Blue K0 with K2 stickers? Weird. No sign of old stickers (faded paint, residue etc) or anything.
Has 19" F and 17" R wheels. Dunno how I'm gonna go finding a new 3.25x17 knobbie...

I'll check frame and engine numbers tomorrow. Does anyone know if the frame and engine numbers should match? (They don't).

Quickie, almost certainly yes. Are you about to tell me that I'm about to drive to Triple Buggery (aka Quickieville)?
