Monty fork paint
« on: February 27, 2010, 09:02:42 am »
Hi all, can any one tell me anything about the colour of my 1980 Cappra 414 VF fork legs, apart from being sort of calf shite green that is? A paint code would be really usefull. Cheers.

No! shite green is the colour of the lower part of the side covers  ;D (actually Drab Olive or Olive Drab depending who you talk to). The fork legs is Marzocchi Magnesium and is more of a Mustard shite  ::)  ;). This paint colour has had several long discussions on this forum.

Jared supplied a paint formula from a 'Limco' paint system.
LB807 (red oxide) 3.90
LB100 (mix clear) 51.00
LB403 (Carbon Black) 100.50
LB704 (Ferrite Yellow) 223.90
LB900 (bright white) 328.40
LB303 (yellow shade green) 345.90
LMC1 (clear mix) 495.80

It means nothing to all the local paint shop near me (Australia)

Solomontesa have spray cans of the colour
http://solomontesa.com/tienda/index.php?cPath=79&osCsid=ce0553213a35c052d226d7a8dc37f403

It is not possible to get it shipped to Australia unfortunately, but I think you are in the UK?

If you do get a paint code or formula please post it here.

You would think that the KTM people would know the correct colour.
I tried a PPG paint  #25385 but it looks wrong.

I also tried this colour, but it looks incorrect as well.

Jared that last picture looks like he colour i have sprayed the forks on my bikes it's called reed green,i left a good fork leg with a paint shop so they could make some up alas not a good match another colour i have used is slate green a closer match but can no longer get it,gold is too metalic but hey its better than legs that look crap when the paint wears off.

You can see the difference between shite green and mustard shite below. The forks are the best my paint guy could mix it is OK in the photo but I know it is not right as it is missing a hint of metalic appearance.

Not sure why the fork photo is on its side but I can not seem to work out how to fix it ???

Does not seem to work Paul my paint guy tried it and the colour came out a shocker . I think the original 'paint' may be some sort of none paint coating as it also appears to be on the inside of the forks as well or is translucent. Possibly an early version of Powder Coat? Whatever it is a pain to replicate

The problem is finding a part with the original colour that has not
faded or changed the shade.

I used an area on the steering stem which had the original 'paint' and was in perfect condition but still no luck with the computer. The paint guy was scratching his head as it should have been OK.

Here's a pic of my 414 with the original untouched forklegs (except for the new decal)
You can just see the top of the leg, which was covered by a forkwiper.  Two different shades! ???

I've had some paint mixed up and have sprayed the legs, looks pretty good to me, I'll post some pic's on here when I can get one of the kid's to show me how, I got the paint code from the guy that mixed it and if anyone thinks it's a good enough match I'll put that up as well. Cheers.
