The reserve price is when a seller sets the auction at an undisclosed hidden starting price. I dont really like those sorts of auctions so i ask the seller and sometimes they tell you. I sometimes use the reserve price auction method if i have a pricy item i dont want to let go too cheaply so if the bidding doesnt meet the reserve your not obligated to sell it. It saves the heartache of selling a item for less than you really want for it.

I understand why you'd use reserve in that case but you could just put your reserve as the starting price what you are willing to take for it so 1 bid or more is fine and you can't lose.

No matter what anyone is saying about the economy and the GFC, stuff just isn't selling ATM.

I've been trying to cut back my fleet of cars recently. I know the market is shitty, and I always try to price stuff so that it actually sells - but even so, its been super tough going.
The one car I have sold (a 1995 Volvo 850 FWIW) was a good clean thing - just serviced, road-worthy certificate, etc. Most similar ones are advertised at $3500+.
I started at $2700, thinking I'd get a quick, easy sale.
I wish! I didn't get a single call until I dropped the asking price to $1800. It finally went to the third caller for $1500... And the two earlier callers were very hard work, and clearly expected a hell of a lot for their $1500 (I told all of them straight away, that $1500 was the price).

The other stuff has garnered basically no interest - even the stuff that I was fending off offers for a year ago, and that the leg humper on AusRotary were all telling me was worth double what I'm asking...

Looking around, a lot of things are suffering from the same lack of buyer interest - even big bore 2-strokes must be feeling the pinch.

And, as a buyer, I'm rapidly realising just how much its a buyer's market at the moment. While lots of things are advertised at the 'normal' price, they're just not selling - and if you look beneath the surface/time it right, you'll find a lot of sellers willing to take a lot less than their asking price. I recently bought a clean, running IT175K - when the seller jumped on my offer of $600 (from an $800 ask), I knew I cold have gotten it for considerably less...

Oh, and the thing with relisting with a higher starting price, is because the seller thought they were going to be swamped with bids the first time around. When that doesn't happen, they give up on the hope of a bidding war, and just aim for what they want (and obviously make it much less likely to sell, which is their choice, I guess).

The good thing about telling the truth is that you don't have to remember what you said.

Yes it is, regardless of what spin they try to put on that. Also, the moment I see "reserve not met", you know the guy is full of it and trying to sell junk for zillions. eBay is not Christies, FFS!

Supply and demand, open class bikes in clean condition seem to have been imported by the truck load and the market has softened. You don't need to buy a dunger so I guess unwashed stuff like the Can Am Sonic just gets looked past.

I think in NZ cars are even worse.

Yeah i read the other day that the American Chopper series has ended....oh well they still have their iron works company to keep them afloat.
Ever since TLC took over from Discovery, they turned it into a disfunctional family reality show that barely showed the bike build anymore, instead of the 2 episode affair of Discovery.

Sort of, but I suppose the difference is that the starting price is immediately visible, while the reserve is not.

I wish I had some spare cash right now. There does seem to be some bikes going cheap.

Too true, but I am really happy I kept it, my hassle is more storing bikes than being able to pay for them.  ;D

If that's who I think it was Dot he had top dollar on all his bikes at that time. The market has definitely softened hasn't it. I guess you couldn't get $120,000 for a Maico 490 these days either...

I know someone who reckon's he's still gunna get that much. ::)
Maico 490's are old news now. They're everywhere and had everything done to them. So much so that they've outlived their niche in history and people are bored with them. Now they either want something that functions and is easy to keep (YZ 465, KX 500, RM 465, CR 480) or something that is indeed unique (Husky CR 500, KTM 494 twinshock, Monty 414). So many other bikes have been turned into Mega 2's that they've actually de-valued the real ones.

Ha!  :)
