How can a 1977 model bike which was available from Dec 1976 not be legal for pre 78? I thought that if the front and rear travel was reduced to the stupid 9" rule the same as required on Maico's and Husky's then they are OK and even the '78 VB is considered a carry over model?

Not trying to start another one of those long political threads but I have seen VB's in photo's from Viper pre78 and watched them race in Heaven.

It would seems completely stupid (the rule that is) to say a bike built only from Oct (I think) 1976 to Nov 1977 could be excluded from pre 78 VMX.

Great information fellas. Thanks.
The MA rule book states for Pre 78 "Montesa models King Scorpion & Cappra VR 250 V-75, VA & Enduro 250H (VB models see the Grand Prix classes)"

Can anyone tell me what 'See the Grand Prix classes' means?

If this bike on eBay is pre '78 legal (which would surprise me) I'll have a more serious look.

It seems I don't have any pre '78 Euro bikes in the shed Tony after all. It will be legal for pre '78 at club level anywhere, but if you want to go to a National meeting (who would ant the head f#$k/) you will have to put travel restrictors into limit it to 9". If you get it and did indeed need gearbox parts, I can most likely help.
Cheers,
K

Thanks K.
So are you saying that you think a '78 250VB would be pre 78 legal with travel restrictors?
If I think realistically, the chances of me getting to anything but club meetings up the road from me are low. So maybe I just go with a cool old bike and worry less about cut off dates etc. If/when I get the chance, I worry about what class it fits into then.
Sorry for all the dumb questions. I'm new to this Euro bike thing.  ;)

My understanding is the same as BigK. It seems silly that you have to reduce the travel in a bike designed in 1976 to fit into its class but their you go ??? The '77 and '78 VB's are almost identical. Minor differences of improved (larger) silencer, rear frame loop over the rear guard removed and some markets had the tank stripes a different colour although from memory Australia had the same colour stripes both years. everything else is the same. There are relatively moderate changes for the '79 VE and even my '80 VF model is very similar.

If someone wants it at $1500, go for it. I'm also more than happy to go to Adelaide to collect and store it for you.
But if it doesn't sell, I'll get in contact with him and go and have a look. I'd go a grand or $1200 for it maybe.

Hang tuff. I reckon you could get it for $1000 or less, which I reckon is more than fair. The gearbox probs will have buyers staying away in droves ;) ;D (a.k.a. Theory A ::)  - well it is EvilPay and strange things happen).

Was that 'back in the day' or more recently?   And why?  What did you prefer about the 360? (I have a curiosity and a vested reason ;))

Tony...You've sealed your fate by being a Mercedes Benz owner. Imagine the joy of turning up at the track, dressed in stylish buttock hugging Lederhosen and Tyrolian style hat, a '77 AW440 Maico on the trailer behind the classic Merc (preferably a tasty matching red '77 450SLC) Wagnerian opera blaring from the Blaupunkt CD player and an esky full of Dortmunder DAB lager, a nice little Liebfraumilch and some Weiswurst and Saurkraut for the post race soiree. The pit tootsies will melt!

As the Klub Kevlar motto says........It's all about style!

I knew I'd find this photo sooner or later.  :D :D

Yeah, the bike's a KTM and the car's a diesel, but it's still got a certain amount of style.  ;)

Thanks again for all the advice fellas!

I turn my back on you all........ :(
When I was trying to get 414 pistons about three years ago, the only place I could get them was from Spain. With the dollar and postage it was costing me over $400.00 to get a piston! :'( (hence why I bought the whole set! ;))
