PLASTIC COATING ON EARLY MODEL HONDA CRANK CASE COVERS
« on: November 05, 2007, 08:32:51 pm »
howdy folks,
am in the middle of restoring 74 model XL350 Honda. Is anyone out there familiar with that grey green plastic coating on crank case
halves and crank case covers. It seems to wear thru in places. Any ideas/suggestions to restore to original appreciated.

Isn't it just green/grey paint. I was going to get some acrylc mixed up in a spray can to touch up my 250 motosport but baulked at the $50+ price. Still might do it one day.

i always wondered what that was and why they did it!  it looks a little bit like the effect you get with your DG pipes after painting them with shellac.  or a tinted clear paint maybe.

Clear paint with few drops of black reducer tinter to colour up. Black being so diluted gives the effect of green tint when applied to alloy. Works a treat.
Todays modern clear are exactly that " clear " back in the day clear coat had green tinge. If you can find some Dulon clear from 1970s that still useable it give you the finish your after as well.

Thanks for the tips guys.Coincidently I had a yarn to an ex spray painter mate of mine the other day and he suggested
two pak clear followed by a hardener should do the trick. Next problem is how to get the remains of the original stuff off.

Im also an old spraypainter. If your going with 2k you best put the hardener IN with clear.  ;) Not spray it over the top.  :)

I've been stripping a 78 CR250 engine and am at the stage it can be blasted in preparation for paint and am wondering if anyone knows if you can sidestep the etch primer and paint two pack successfully straight onto the engine which it appears was what Honda did.

Information about paint selection , colours (including frame and swingarm) and any other stuff would be appreciated - and what about the paint for the barrel and head - I know in the wonderful world of Maico we have a great choice with heatproof black but the Honda has me a little tossed?

Over to the panel of expert listeners for the guts, thankyou!!!

See you at the back of the pack in '08  ;)
