non vintage question re XR400's
« on: May 14, 2009, 08:13:13 pm »
I've decided I'm going to buy a trailbike to get some more ride time between MX meets, and I've narrowed down to a XR400 based on the availability/popularity, price, and reputation for being unbreakable.

Is there a model in the late 90's/early 2000's that's better or worse than others for some reason, or is there any particular thing I should look out for with this bike?

I was reading another thread where people were talking about twin carbed XR's being a problem so I thought I'd ask for some opinions before starting the search.

Cheers
Paul

They sorted out the gearbox problem in 2000, the first of the red one's.
It was a weakness in second gear. I have a 2001 and have had it for 7 years Iv'e not had one problem with it at all.  I have not long returned from a two day ride from Licola to Dargo and back 310 K's over all sorts of terrain from extreme rock to snow and not to mention around 27 river crossings, it went everywhere the CRF's and WR's and KTM's went, just as fast and did not miss a beat and on half the fuel.
I have a CRF as well  but I rather take the XR trail riding, as they say they are tractors they love to climb hills.  Oh and the seat is more comfortable  :)
