XL 250 Motosport Ignition...CDI V's Points
« on: April 29, 2009, 06:43:22 pm »
Hi,
Picked up a 72/73 XL 250 Motosport today and it runs fine and is 95% original.
The guy I bought it off was a small engine mechanic and he has attached a CDI unit from a mower into the wiring which can be disconected at any time to let the old points to the job. He said he can't tell the difference in the way the bike runs except that it will blow a spark plug in short time if he connects the CDI unit.
He reckons it has something to do with the spark being too hot.
Anyone out there know anything about running the CDI and the possible problems it may cause.
Cheers T.

Hi,
I'll have a look tomorrow and get the numbers and ID of the unit and let you know. Thanks

Back again.

The CDI unit on the bike has Victor stamped on it with no other numbers.
Was talking to a mate of mine today and he said you have to change the heat range of the plug if you run it through the CDI which is probably why it was blowing plugs quicker than running through the points.
Cheers
