83 250 hard to start
« on: September 28, 2007, 10:09:08 am »
Just about finished my 83 resto tred to start it, kick kick kick kick etc finally it started  ran it for a while turned it off  and then tried to start it a few minutes later and it wont start - plug is wet and has spark
What do you think I was going to check over the timing and electrical stuff its got a fresh top end and should run.
also the kick starter gets stuck fold it away and then it fine for a bit

the plastic pawl on the starter sounds like its worn  causing the sticking
and if its hot and not starting possibly an air leak or to lean on your mixtures

thanks
had a look at a parts fiche last nite an a washer is missing between the case and kick start spring. Air leak may be from the right side crank seal there seem to be some bearing play there so out it come for a bottom end.

If you haven't already, try fresh fuel.
I've been caught by the same symptoms with fuel that was in the tank and only 2 weeks old............................  ;D

cleaned the chassis (back to bare metal) to give a good earth, and done the bottom end and now she is flying.

premium unleaded goes off real quick in small quantities. its quite common for the small amount in float bowls to go off  after a week or so and then the bike is impossible to start unless you drain the float bowl. has anyone one come across fuel thats gone green? that really stinks!

green fuel sucks and it wrecks your jets, so draining the fuel is a good idea if your ride is going to sit for a while

ive only ever found it in old bikes that have come to me for restos and have been sitting for yrs. the worst was a late 70's XS750 yam. i had to deal with 3 carbs full of the green stuff!

how's the resto going simon?  manage to rebuild the engine yet?  be great if you could make it to the start line on nov 4 at fairbairn but we all know how time consuming these things can be.

fyi, the combined DT/MX two day bob greenwood memorial event there 24-25 nov is now sadly mx only, on 25 nov.  the dt guys weren't able to get all the work done to the track for relicensing in time.  i might have done my first ever dirt track event!  you into that side of things too?

rod kit turned up Friday and a put it together Saturday, then run her in on race day. I took it easy til the last race.seems to be producing good power and should be even better next round. Managed to place 3rd (I think)
Got some photos on photo bucket but dont know how to post them so that they just come up I see the insert image icon but what do you do from there?

you don't mess around simon do you.  well done mate, well done.  it looks a treat.  and third on first outing in our hotly contested pre-85 class too.  that's great news actually, because long standing class leader Krafty from Kooma will I'm sure only be glad of a newcomer able to put it to him (I keep promising myself I'll do that...next race for sure....).

so in that case, i really look forward to nov 4!
