CT175 no spark

Can anyone inform me whether a CT175 Yamaha needs a good battery to run. Bike has no spark and the battery is shagged.

Battery NOT required at all for spark, points magneto system ignition. Battery for lighting curcuit.

Doesn't need a battery.

Call it a CT1 and people won't think you're screwing up your Honda's engine capacity. ;)

Apparently it ran before i bought it a couple of years ago and i parked it til today. Maybe i should be looking at the points then.
